LIVE24SEVEN // Fashion, Health & Beauty AE S THE T I C S E X P E R T – DR C LAI R E OL I V E R Keeping skin safe in
Aesthetics expert Dr Claire Oliver looks at how to ensure you protect your skin from harmful UV rays all year round. Packing sunscreen for your holiday is as essential as ensuring your passport and tickets are in your hand luggage.
We are well aware of the potential dangers of too much sun on our annual beach break and most of us wouldn’t dream of spending the day by the hotel pool without having covered ourselves in SPF50.
But when it comes to hot days at home, how many of us can honestly say we religiously apply sun protection? And, to take it one step further, would you do the same on a cloudy October day?
While the sun, in moderation, can definitely have a positive and uplifting effect on our mood as well as provide us with vitamin D, improve circulation and increase metabolism and productivity, excessive exposure can be very harmful. UV radiation and UVA rays in particular, are present all day, every day – and yes, in winter as well as in the summer – so facial sun protection should be an absolute integral part of your daily skincare routine.
the Sun...
And it’s not something we can ignore. Unprotected and excessive exposure to the sun’s damaging rays can have both short and long-term consequences, is the number one cause of premature ageing, immune suppression and, most dramatically, skin cancer. According to Cancer Research UK, 86% of malignant melanoma cases in the UK are preventable since they are linked to sun exposure and therefore insufficient skin protection.
Sunshine is an attack on the skin, and one way it defends itself is to produce pigment. However, over time the damage works its way to the surface and this can result in fine lines, wrinkles, mottled pigmentation and age spots.
The key to staying safer in the sun is understanding the risks and adjusting your behaviour to ensure skin is properly protected at all times.
WHAT I RECOMMEND
The ZO Skin Health sun protection range offers effective daily solutions to minimise UV damage, prevent DNA damage and protect from environmental aggressors to improve overall skin health. With a combination of organic and inorganic sunscreens, plus fractionated melanin, ZO’s products offer that all-important protection while at the same helping skin to increase tolerance and stimulate skin renewal.
For every day protection, Heliocare® is clinically proven to protect your skin against environmental challenges and help to prevent the signs of ageing. Each product provides high-level broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection and contains Fernblock®, a patented natural complex of powerful anti-oxidants that help prevent damage to skin cells. For enhanced protection and high-level SPF50, Heliocare® 360° is ideal for those who spend a lot time outdoors or who have fairer skin.
