The July fab four...

Johnny Cash – The Original Sun Albums - 1957-1964 (Charly) The legacy of Johnny Cash, the man in black, one of the most influential artists to emerge from the original rock'n'roll era, is honoured in the release of The Original Sun Albums - 1957-1964. This very impressive, lavishly packaged and newly remastered eight CD set is something that every Johnny Cash fan will want to own. Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the very first Johnny Cash album released in 1957, this coffee table-sized 60-page hardback book presents, for the first time ever, all seven classic Sun albums in one deluxe collection; 83 songs as they appeared on the original LPs, plus a bonus CD of alternative versions, rare recordings and outtakes, all newly remastered from the original Sun Records master tapes.

Also included are all of the Johnny Cash seven inch single A and B sides originally released on Sun, including the hit singles I Walk The Line, Cry Cry Cry, Folsom Prison Blues, Ballad Of A Teenage Queen and Home Of The Blues. The set reproduces original album artwork, liner notes and labels and includes rare photos and memorabilia from the Sun archives, as well as recollections from producer Sam Phillips.

Johnny Cash would have been 85 this year.

The Allman Brothers Band: Hell and High Water – The Best of the Arista Years (Retroworld) From the American south, The Allman Brothers Band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 and is one of my all-time favourite bands. Their major hit in the USA was Ramblin' Man, a number two single in 1973. Although they never charted in the UK, they are best known for the instrumental Jessica, the theme music to TV's Top Gear programme.

Hell and High Water is a compilation CD, collecting together the best recordings made by The Allman Brothers Band for the Arista label in the early 1980s. Core members of the band at that time were the recently deceased Gregg Allman, Dickie Betts, Butch Trucks, David Goldflies, Dan Toler and Mike Lawler.

Tracks are selected from the 1980 album Reach for the Sky and the 1981 album Brothers of the Road. Best cuts include I Got a Right to be Wrong, Leavin', Straight from the Heart, The Judgement and the instrumental From The Madness Of The West.

Jethro Tull – Stand Up (Chrysalis) Led by charismatic front man, vocalist and flautist Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull formed in 1967, naming themselves after the 18th century English agriculturist. The rest of the band were made up of Mick Abrahams on guitar, Glenn Cornick on bass and Clive Bunker on drums. 1968 was a breakthrough year for Jethro Tull, as they claimed a residency at the Marquee Club in Wardour Street in London, opened for Pink Floyd at the first-ever free rock concert in London's Hyde Park and also got signed to Island Records.

The following year they notched up their first major hit singles with Living in the Past and Sweet Dream and released the LP Stand Up, considered to be the band's best album. This is now re-released on CD in its entirety, plus bonus tracks Driving Song, Bourée and the aforementioned Living in the Past, all remastered in both stereo and mono.

The Hollies – Head Out of Dreams (Parlophone) Manchester's Hollies formed in the early sixties and enjoyed their first hit singles in 1963. They went on to score over 30 hits in all, including chart toppers I'm Alive in 1965 and The Air That I Breathe in 1988. They notched up a dozen top 40 USA hits too, the biggest of them, surprisingly, Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, which made number two in 1972.

This six-CD box set chronicles all of The Hollies' recordings between August 1973 and May 1988. The only ever-present members of the band during that time were Allan Clarke on lead vocals, Tony Hicks on guitar and vocals and Bobby Elliot on drums (one of my drumming inspirations). Of the half dozen CDs here, the one I like the best is their tribute to Buddy Holly, after whom they took their name, with wonderfully harmonious renditions of Buddy Holly classics including Heartbeat, Think It Over, Maybe Baby, Peggy Sue Got Married, That'll Be The Day, It Doesn't Matter Anymore and Everyday.
