Your exploration starts in UNESCO-listed Budapest. Be sure to pay a visit to the Buda Castle complex, uncover the historic Millennium Underground Railway, and take a trip along Andrássy Avenue to Heroes’ Square. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge, the oldest of twelve bridges, is a joy to behold too, while throughout the city there are many fine cafés and restaurants – not to forget the iconic thermal healing baths – to indulge in.

From Kalocsa you can head on a journey to learn about the history of paprika, and how it became the ‘red gold’ of the region. Alternatively, admire Hungarian horses and traditional costumes during a horse show within the Puszta Plains.

Day 1 Budapest, Hungary (embarkation late afternoon)

Day 2 Budapest, Hungary Day 3 Kalocsa, Hungary Day 4 Belgrade, Serbia Day 5 Cruising through the Iron Gates Day 6 Vidin, Bulgaria Day 7 Ruse, Bulgaria Day 8 Cruising the Lower Danube Day 9 St Gheorghe, Romania

Day 10 Hirsova, Romania (disembarkation after breakfast)

During a day in Belgrade, historic monuments and museums exhibit Serbia’s fascinating history. Don’t miss Knez Mihailova Boulevard, which leads on to the Kalemegdan Fortress. Here, beautiful natural views can be savoured. A momentous experience follows as Brabant cruises through the Iron Gates gorges. Flanked by National Parks, the river narrows to just 150m wide at the Great Kazan Gorge, where you’ll encounter the Rock Sculpture of Decebalus. The river will then bring you to remote Vidin, where the Baba Vida Fortress – one of the best preserved in the country – is a must-see.

Budapest

Ruse is often referred to as ‘Little Vienna’ because of its extravagant architecture and elegant squares. The Monument of Liberty is the symbol of the city, though several museums make for worthwhile stops, as does the Danube Bridge. Meanwhile the nearby Rusenski Lom Nature Park features stunning rock monasteries and caves.

Tours to Bucharest are available on day eight, or you can stay on board and experience an absorbing sailing through the floodplains, forests and islands of the Lower Danube. Make sure you’re out on deck the following morning to see the point where the Danube – which flows through 10 countries – finally completes its journey to the Black Sea.

The picturesque village of St Gheorghe presents the opportunity to take a rewarding small boat trip through the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. This blissfully remote area is a haven for wildlife and time spent here is a great way to round off your holiday.
