You’ll join Brabant in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, with time to explore the following morning. Though the city boasts excellent museums – particularly the Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank House – and a network of famous canals, a trip to the resplendent, 32-hectare Keukenhof Gardens is a must. Especially as you’ll be around at the best time to view the vibrant tulips. There are many pavilions filled with flowering bulbs and pot plants too, including a collection of orchids. You can even take in the bulb fields in an electrically-propelled boat.

Day 6 Düsseldorf, Germany (disembarkation after breakfast)

After cruising the IJsselmeer Lake, Hoorn is your next call. The main landmark is the cosy harbour, which indicates a prosperous heritage: Hoorn was once a major trading base during the Dutch ‘Golden Age’. The compact town centre presents seven museums all within easy reach. A stop is also made in Kampen to savour one of the best-preserved historic centres in the country, displaying churches, towers and remains of the ancient city wall.

Continuing down the IJssel River, you’ll pass Zwolle and a string of villages en route to Deventer. This is a city of great industrial and religious significance. Seek out intricate Hanseatic architecture along the twisting streets, admire the ceiling paintings of St Lebuin’s Church, or perhaps try some of the famous spiced honey cake. Deventer is home to the Netherlands’ oldest stone house, oldest scientific library, and oldest park too, so you’re sure to be in for a unique experience.

Brabant will pass by Zutphen, heading on to historic Arnhem. A short distance away from the city centre is the Netherlands Open Air Museum. Beautifully situated within a wooded park, this fascinating site showcases houses, antiques, clothing and production methods from many different periods, along with classic electric trams.

Fort Pannerden is an arresting sight to behold, as Brabant transits the Pannerden Canal. The afternoon will then be spent in Nijmegen. In the Netherlands’ oldest city, the Valkhof Museum is a great spot to start your exploration, given its engaging displays and Roman artefacts. Take a walk along the Waalbrug too, for views of the Old Town and the Waal River below. All this before you disembark in Düsseldorf on the following day.
