The students were set a task to help design a better method of saving lives at sea on a scale version of an RNLI Lifeboat. The students were also spoken to by Bournemouth University engineering department, telling them about what engineering means and the RNLI, telling them about how engineering is central to their roles and what they offer their marine apprentices, as well as some insight into the RNLI as a whole, and the College’s Marine Engineering centre.
expert panel of judges in the process of working together as a team – particularly on how effectively they worked in those teams. A number of teams were chosen to be awarded prizes in various categories and whilst the judges chose those teams, the expectant audience was provided with inspiration from Neil Heritage, a former army engineer who is also a double amputee and has rowed across the Atlantic and attempted an “impossible” climb of the Matterhorn in 2016 and who will attempt it a second time in 2017. We shall see more of Mr Heritage in November 2017 in the school when he comes to do a talk for us then.
The students involved enjoyed the event and found it a good insight into the skills required, even though they were unsuccessful in the competition.
