An appreciation of people with spe-
cial needs has yet to emerge. Although not all do not have bodies that look or function in the same ways, we are all
consciousness expressing itself, and we all carry the divine spark within. We all have an opportunity to comprehend what the presence of people with special needs means in our lives, and to understand them, if we become aware that neither we not they are victims of circumstance. That awareness brings us a gift. It may not be in the package we expected, but when we learn that all of us come to this life, not only for them- selves, but for us as well, we can make a giant leap in consciousness. What can be thus perceived as an immense hardship or as
a transformative experience. We have the choice—and if we change our perceptions, our lives will never be the same. Lily Grinsberg lives with her family in Northern New
Jersey. She is an artist, writer, and gives public talks about being a parent of two adult children with special-needs. Her
book, I You and Us: Living with a Special-Needs Family on the Journey to Self-Discovery (Full Court Press), describes how her family experiences have shaped her spiritual growth: What she once perceived as the worst thing that could have happened to her changed her in ways she never dreamed of. All proceeds from the book, and from her talks, benefit Camp Acorn, a social recreational program for children with special needs in Allendale, New Jersey.
