At the time of the crash, the high school baseball team was participating in their school’s con- cussion management program. Tis program included baseline testing and post-injury neurocog- nitive testing. Following the crash, the high school required all the student-athletes on the bus to participate in a post-injury concussion assessment before allowing the student-athletes to return to their sport. Te results were eye-opening. Of the 30 athletes onboard, 16 athletes exhibited significant cognitive changes that were indicative of a concussion. Some of the student-athletes experienced symptoms that took months to resolve. A better understanding of the risks associated with concussion injuries may enable a different approach to the discussion of school bus occupant protection. Further, concussions result in short-term disability for children and adolescents and may also


result in long-term complications. While the school bus protected its occupants from life-threat- ening injuries in this severe high-speed crash, perhaps future school bus design should account for “minor” injuries, like concussions, that can cause significant challenges not just for athletes, but all student passengers. Kristin Poland, Ph.D., is the deputy director of NTSB’s Office of Highway Safety and oversees all


investigations conducted by the office. She previously served as a biomechanical engineer in NTSB’s Vehicle Performance Division in the Office of Research and Engineering. Poland developed the NTSB methodology for occupant kinematics investigations and performed occupant kinematics simulations and injury causation analysis for the 1999 special investigation report on bus crashworthiness.
