The Options of Retirement

Well it has been three years since I re- tired from "Country 101.1", "Y101", "Young Country Y101" or the official and formal name "CKBY". Many folks talk about how bored they'd be when they retire; just sit at home and read a book or become a computer junky. My wife Bev and I did a lot of talking and planning leading up to retirement and the one thing we said we wouldn’t do is sit around and die. And boy was that a true statement.

I was always a busy person even when I was working the morning show at Y101 and in the early days I MC’d as many as 150+ events per year and on top of getting up at 3:00 am, it definitely taxed the body. However, I loved it but I also love what I am doing now since my retirement. I have always had a passion for the four "INGs"; FishING, huntING, golfING and travelING, so the thought process after retirement was, this is what I would do as long as I had my health and so far so good!

Fishing

I've always been an avid fisherman so a few years leading up to retirement I joined a private fish camp in Quebec. It has a few trout lakes where I can leave all my fishing gear including rods, reels, tackle and motors in a personal locker. I usually get up to the camp 7 to 10 times a year and bring a few guests with me. We have a lovely couple (John and Dianne) who stay there from April until No- vember to keep the road and facilities maintained

but the most appealing thing to me is the fact that Dianne cooks all our meals with the food I bring with me and I can tell you when she puts together a fish fry on the beach at the main lake with fresh made onion rings, fish and chips you will think you have died and gone to heaven. As we head to Florida for the winter, I also have a lot of great spots to go Bass fishing and have had the luck of catching a 7 lb. large mouth (previ- ous Bounder edition).

Hunting

I also have the love of walking in the bush & bow hunting in the fall for deer. I have hunted deer in past years but approximately 15 years ago, the radio-rating period overlapped the gun hunt timeframe. With the encouragement of my brother Jerry, I picked up the bow and I’ve had a passion for it ever since. I have turkey hunted in the spring with my bow and to be honest I have missed a few times, with the turkeys leading 4-0. My friend Brian Wilson seems to have better luck at that sport but I still enjoy getting up on the cool early mornings and heading out to wait and hope to get one. One afternoon sitting side by side, with the turkey decoy 20 yards in front of us, a coyote came from behind us and smashed the decoy over. To this day,I am not sure who was more surprised the coyote or Brian and I. It always seems that we both have a story, either when we are hunting or fishing with a memory that seems to last forever.
