three guitars, in addition to her trusty Maton electric. Using a variety of miniature liquor bottles as slides while learning the cigar boxes, Boyes employs a traditional one here, unleashing withering, elegant licks to accompany her gutsy, throaty vocals. Toss in drums, double bass and a variety of percussive touches – on Walking Around Money loose coins in the pocket of drummer Mark Grunden, appropriately – that includes congas, bells, chains and horse shoes and you’ve got brilliant, stripped-down, true grit blues from the heart and soul. Her covers of Chester Burnett’s
Smokestack Lightning, J.C. Johnson’s Black Mountain Blues (menacing tone just right for the classic end lyrics: “I’m bound for Black Mountain, me and my razor and my gun, I’m gonna shoot him if he stands still, gonna cut him if he runs”) and Magic Sam Maghett’s Easy Baby are superb: nuanced, powerful, ringing with sublime slide work and delicious vocals. Just as good are every one of her
originals. Louisiana sounds like it could be blues from the 30’s or 40’s à la Memphis Minnie; I Done Quit is an absolute powerhouse of slide and growling vocals. Walk with Me is brilliantly understated and lean, Boyes masterful on the cherished National baritone, and every other track is equally as compelling. The entire album is a glorious
shout out to old style blues performed by a fantastic guitarist and dynamic singer. If that’s your thing, Box and Dice is intoxicatingly addictive – this is the real deal from one of the best blues artists alive, male or female.
