space, so there was lots of shuffling around of equipment. Equipment was still available but in a tighter area. We typically have 100+ group exer- cise classes per week, but we added more to the schedule and encouraged members to try them as a workout alternative.


FBC: What have been the outcomes? PB: Our members are excited and love the changes. We don’t hear free weights dropping anymore since this area is now on the ground floor, and everything feels spacious and brighter. All this helps with membership num- bers when members talk with their friends. The changes have definitely

FBC: How stressful was the project? PB: The project ran quite smoothly, but it definitely added to everyone’s workload. I’ve been with the club since 1999, and we’ve made some kind of im- provement every year. With practise you get better at everything, and you


realize that it’s worth all the time and effort.


FBC: What’s next? PB: We’re currently renovating our coat room, junior locker rooms and soon the pool. These will be easier be- cause they are all contained areas, so the dust, mess and noise won’t be as obvious to members.

Fitness Business Canada: What prompted this project? Sue Snow (recreation services man- ager): The fitness and recreation area hadn’t been substantially upgraded since I joined the club 20 years ago. The walls were a sick mustard brown colour, the exercise equipment was mismatched and some of it was over 20 years old. There was no proper stor- age for all of our small pieces of fitness equipment, and trying to keep it all tidy and accessible drove me crazy.


FBC: What changes did you make to the club? SS: The thin wood laminate and black rubber that was on some of the floors was all changed to match other ex- isting flooring. All the lights were re- placed with a style that shines up and reflects off the ceiling and doesn’t blind people who are lying on mats. All the dark heavy railings were re-


placed with glass panels, and a large mirror was installed on one wall to
