ENJOYING LIFE’S PLEASURES
I love food, wine and the arts... Without
them, life would be pretty dull, indeed. This is- sue, our wine and spirits, is one of my favorites to compose, because the topics within give me such great pleasure. This time the issue ended up with a nice mix-
ture of what might be called, “The finer things in life…” We poured into it everything from information on wine and beverage trends, to the many festivals that blanket Southern California with celebrations paying homage to them. Seriously, one could do a great deal of damage to one’s waistline, not to mention the liver, traipsing through the region’s hills and valleys, supping on the delicacies offered. I haven’t even mentioned the vast craft cock- tails, heady spirits and frothy beer options! Music is a centerpiece this month and
we have the genre well-covered. Patricia Racette, the opera diva extraordinaire, was kind enough to chat about her brilliant career on the opera stage and her many, many ac- complishments there. I especially enjoyed the conversation, because she is one of a tiny number who are “out” in that profession. Life with Racette and her wife, Beth Clayton is well documented and during the conversation, it again occurred to me that as a community, we have really come so far. Far enough, so that marriage and career are simply part of a nor- mal conversation, not really that much to write home about—my God—can it be so? Pentatonix has been around for a blip in
time and to say that they have taken the world by storm, is such an understatement. It’s more
than amazing and the conversation gives a perspective on how much the internet has changed the music industry. Mitch Grassi made those changes so clear to me, because of the way he described the way they achieved their meteoric success. Through hard work and commitment that is abundantly clear, but also with a savvy understanding of how to market themselves on the web. I for one, am in complete awe of them. Their comfort level with the medium, is really just second nature to them. The film industry has been putting out sev-
eral standouts for the LGBT community in the last few years, with The Imitation Game, Love is Strange, Freeheld, and so many others. The Danish Girl, is the latest in the series and looks to be a great one. Transgender portrayals that put characters in a positive light are finally be- coming more prevalent, let’s hope the trend continues. Of the role, Eddie Redmayne, who consulted with people of all ages with in said that it was “the most brilliant education… Their kindness and support galvanized me.” It’s another signal that tells me how much
has changed. So very much has been altered and so much still needs to be done.
