SAN DIEGO THEATRE BRIEFS

END OF THE RAINBOW Peter Quilter’s savagely funny play, is a semi- autobiographical show set during Christmas, 1968. Judy Garland is holed up at the London Ritz Hotel with fiancé number five, Mickey Deans along with her loyal friend and pianist, Anthony. Garland is desperately hoping her six-week run of cabaret shows, at London’s Talk of the Town nightclub, will revive her career once again and bring in some much-needed cash. It’s a story that offers unique insights into Garland’s inner conflicts, which both inspired and consumed one of the most beloved figures in American culture. End of the Rainbow features some of Garland’s most memorable songs, “The Man That Got Away,” “Come Rain Or Come Shine,” “The Trolley Song” and of course, “Over The Rainbow,” sung by award-winning actress and local legend, Eileen Bowman. The show runsSunday, Novem- ber 1 through Sunday, November 29 and is a production of the Intrepid Theatre Company, in their temporary home at the Lyceum Theatre downtown. For tickets and more information, call 888.718.4258 or go tointrepidtheatre.org.

INDECENT A world-premiere play with music and songs popular to the era, Indecent was co-created by Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel and Rebecca Taichman [Milk Like Sugar, Sleeping Beauty Wakes]. The show is based on the actual events that sur- rounded the controversial Sholem Asch play, God of Vengeance, which debuted in 1922 on Broadway. Considered to be the seminal work on Jewish culture for some, by many others it was deemed as traitorous libel. The play-about-a-play runs fromFriday, November 13 through Thurs- day, December 10 and traces the course of the incendiary work, those who risked their careers to perform and produce it and “the evolving identity of the culturally-rich community that inspired its creation.” In conjunction with the show, the Play- house has partnered with the Center for Jewish Culture’s “Straight from the Page” program to offer a free staged reading of God of Vengeance, directed by D. Candis Paule, onMonday, Novem- ber 2, with a talkback moderated by Playhouse Resident Dramaturge, Shirley Fishman. For tickets and more information, call 858.550.1010 or go tolajollaplayhouse.org.

WHITE CHRISTMAS San Diego Musical Theatre is returning again

this year with everybody’s favorite holiday story, White Christmas. It may seem a little early for a Christmas story, but this classic, with its timeless stories about taking care of those around you, is so much more than just a little Yule moment. Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a suc- cessful song-and-dance act after World War II. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters, en route to their Christ- mas show at a Vermont lodge. One that just hap- pens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander. Irving Berlin composed the timeless music and lyrics such as “White Christmas,” “Sisters” and “Love, You Didn’t Do Right By Me.” So come see “those treetops glisten” as you join in the holiday cheer from Friday, November 27 through Sunday, December 6 at the Spreckels Theatre in Downtown San Diego. For tickets and more information, call 858.560.5740 or go tosdmt.org.

BRIGHT HALF LIFE From marriage and children, to skydiving and

Ferris wheels, Bright Half Life compiles all of the infinite moments that represent a life together. Playwright Tanya Barfield and The Diversion- ary, have come together to bring this vital play about a lesbian couple, spanning their 40-year relationship of ups and downs. Theatremania says this, “It may sound fatalistic to accept that every relationship has a half life—that true love is not an infinite resource destined to endure for eternity. It certainly defies the institution of marriage, whose romantic reputation hinges on this concept of ‘foreverness.’ True, it’s no fairy tale story, but Bright Half Life sacrifices none of its head-over-heels ro- mance, even as its central couple spirals towards extinction.” Bright Half Life runs through Sunday, November 29, for tickets and more information, call 619.220.0097 or go to diversionary.org.
