25TH ANNUAL TREE OF LIFE

WORLD AIDS DAY CANDLELIGHT VIGIL It’s still November and though Thanksgiving hasn’t arrived yet, there are many special ceremonies afoot designed to celebrate life and commemorate those who are no longer with us. Mama’s Kitchen’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Candlelight Vigil is one of those moments and is again taking place at Village Hill- crest’s plaza on World AIDS Day, Tuesday, December 1, in honor of the many who have passed and in support of those who live with or have been affected by, HIV/AIDS. It reminds us that though great progress has been made, HIV/AIDS has not gone away and there are many things yet to be done. On hand too, will be the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus to perform holiday selections, with free refreshments and speakers. For more information about the Tree of Life, to order your personalized heart ornament, or to participate in holiday giving opportunities, please call Aimee Halfpenny at 619.233.6262 or visitmamaskitchen.org/events/ treeoflife.php.

San Diego’s chapter is one of the largest spe- cialty chambers in the county and is the second largest gay, lesbian and supportive chamber in the nation. Each year through a myriad of events and mixers, they strive to bring the LGBT community together and to promote businesses and services throughout the San Diego region. OnWednesday, December 2, they are having their Annual Holiday Event And Toy Drive and though their mission has not altered, this year’s location has, tak- ing place at the Westin San Diego, 400 W. Broadway in downtown. Bring a new, unwrapped toy or unwrapped blanket (or two or three of each, depending on your in- ternal Santa) and enjoy the many benefits of the GSDBA! TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE November is Transgender awareness month, which is an idea born out of Transgen- der Day of Remembrance, the 1999 candlelight vigil in recognition of the 1998 murder (still unsolved) of Rita Hester in Allston, Mass. It’s important now more than ever, due to the alarming increase in violence (includ- ing murders), to recognize not only the unique needs of the transgender community,

but the desperate need to ensure their safety. As a part of the month’s demarcation and to recognize that great need, each year, the Transgender Day of Remembrance marks the month with a candlelight vigil and march. The event will be taking place Friday, November 20, at 6 p.m. and begins at the San Diego LGBT Center and will march throughout Hillcrest, ending at the San Diego AIDS Memorial on Normal Street. For more information or for questions about how you can support the Transgender community, contact The San Diego LGBT Center by calling 619.692.2077 or go to thecentersd.org.
