SIGHTS AND SOUNDS ART SAN DIEGO

by joel martens Art San Diego is a juried, four-day contemporary art show

that features over 500 leading contemporary artists, museum exhibitions, art labs events and talks focused on collecting. The event takes place at the 60,000-square-foot Balboa Park Activity Center, with an international slate of artists and galler- ies exhibited… and you are all invited to attend! One of the major exhibitors and organizers is Alexander

Salazar and of the event he had this to say, “I have been an art dealer for 18 years and most of them have been here in San Diego since I arrived from Boston. I have seen the best and worst in San Diego’s art scene and am happy to report that you are in for a treat at this particular art fair. 2015’s theme is META.MORPHOSIS: 100 Years of Art, which is a totally fabulous way to describe it all.” The theme is in honor of the Balboa Park Centennial Celebration, commemorating the 100th anniver- sary of the park’s opening. Salazar extrapolated on why it’s important to attend, “Let’s emphasize the point of it all… Your attendance will support not only the artists and galleries on hand, but the San Diego Contemporary Art Museum and that alone is pretty awesome.” Now in its seventh year, Art San Diego again returns to Balboa Park and as in past years, attendees will pack the hall. Salazar explains its unique qualities, “Unlike other art fairs, Art San Diego showcases solo artist booths, which means you can buy the art directly from the artist and meet them during your purchase. Not one to cut out an art dealer for a sale, as I am one myself, I want to emphasize the point that you will be directly supporting the actual artist one-on-one.” As to why that is important and vital? “San Diego lacks direct art patrons who often support artists individually by buying their art consis- tently, until they’re successful… At least until they are too busy

to handle their own sales and need someone like myself to represent them,” Salazar opined. “Art San Diego is your chance to make a difference in an artist’s career—by simply buying as they are emerging on to the art scene.” What a great reason to attend… Salazar filled in with more details, “There will be of course,

art galleries, art Labs (a fancy word for a special art exhibit) and spotlight programs, including Arte Cuba! It’s a magnificent collection of Cuban art, a part of Spectrum’s Miami Contem- porary Art Show. Some of the artists included are Darian Ro- driguez Mederos, Luis Enrique Toledo and Andres Conde.” On the local front, Salazar offered this, “San Diego’s own Brittany Segal will be the LaunchPad program artist. It’s an opportunity for an unrepresented artist to exhibit. In Segal’s case, it is based on her amazing talent on canvas and in graphic work. “ When asked what he would be featuring as a gallery owner,

Salazar had this to say, “UBS Financial Services is the present- ing sponsor and I have the honor of exhibiting artwork in both VIP USB Lounges, located at both corners of the art fair and the lineup is going to be pretty impressive. The exhibits include many San Diego artists such as Boogie, Walter Redondo, Lindsey Nobel, John Dupree, William Engel and the late Paul Maxwell. A new artist that I will be exhibiting is the amazing Karl Soderland and a piece from his “Iconic Obsessions” series, “Toast To Marilyn.” It is a large portrait of Miss Monroe made of small lips and it is simply amazing. So, come by and give Marilyn a kiss—or give me a kiss—I’ll be waiting for you!”
