2015 Dance Council Scholarship Recipients

Minga Prather Jerry Bywaters & Calloway Cochran Scholarship

Minga Prather has been dancing since she was four years old. She is an alumni of Booker T. Washington HSPVA and currently attends the Fordham University/Ailey School joint program. She has received awards from the National Young Arts Foundation as a 2014 modern finalist. Minga attended the Hubbard Street Summer Intensive Program this year.

Geomay B. Sanders Gene, Louise & Fred Kelly Tap Scholarship

Geornay Sanders has been dancing since she was three years old. She has trained with the DCNT Hoofin’ Crew under Tracy Jordan, Rhythmic Souls under Katelyn Harris, and Our Mother of Mercy Dancers under Beverly Torres, among many others. This summer she attended Third Coast Rhythm Project Summer Tap Festival.

Natasha Sheehan Artful Dancewear Ballet Scholarship

Natasha Sheehan attends the San Francisco Ballet School year around. In 2011-12 she was cast as “Clara” in SF Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker and was also awarded “The Angelina Ballerina Scholarship” by Dizzy Feet Foundation. As a trainee at the School, she has performed various corps de ballet roles with the compa- ny. Natasha attended Ellison Ballet Professional Training Program this summer.

William Sheriff Jr. Cindy’s Day Ballet Scholarship

William Sheriff Jr. is an early graduate from Flower Mound High School and currently studies at the Ballet Academy of Texas in Coppell. William has been study- ing ballet for four years, and attended the San Francisco Ballet School’s Summer Intensive with the help of his DCNT scholarship.

Amaria Stern Charles Andrew Kulp Scholarship

Amaria Stern is a senior at Booker T. Washington HSPVA and has danced in the performing companies since her sophomore year. In addition to studying dance at Booker T., Amaria also takes classes at Dallas Black Dance Academy where she studies ballet and pointe. This summer, Amaria attended the Ailey School summer intensive.

Anasthasia Tillman Gloria Ziaks & Caryn Halpern Scholarship

Anastasia Tillman is currently in the second course of studies at The Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow, Russia, working towards a diploma with the specialty of “Choreographic Art” with the qualification of “Ballet Dancer.” When Anastasia is home on vacation, she also trains at The Ballet Conservatory. This summer, Anastasia attended the Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive.

Aldrin Vendt Amber Strauser Scholarship

Aldrin Vendt is one of four siblings that dance—two professionally. He began training when he was eight and now studies at the Ballet Academy of Texas, where he performs with the Ballet Ensemble of Texas. In 2013, he placed first in the Youth America Grande Prix Semi-Final Senior Men’s Classical Division. This sum- mer, Aldrin attended the American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive in New York.

Rachel Wade GBCP Choreographers Scholarship

Rachel Wade is the Co-Director of Dance at Arlington Heights High School, where she teaches modern, ballet, choreography, peer response and critical analysis, dance history, and production. Rachel also guest teaches in the School for Classical and Contemporary Dance at Texas Christian University, where she received her BFA in Modern Dance, and mentors student teachers from the SCCD and TCU School of Education. She attended the Glenda Brown Choreography Project this summer.

Cecilia Spear Natalie Skelton Scholarship to attend GBCP

Cecilia Spear started dancing when she was three years old. She currently dances at Kingwood Dance Theatre where she is also a part of the pre-professional ballet company. She attended Montclair State University this fall as a dance major. This summer, Cecilia attended the Glenda Brown Choreography Project.

Jordan Willis Fred (Poppy) Ziaks Memorial Scholarship

Jordan Willis began her dance training at the age of five at Dallas Black Dance Academy, where she now works as a teaching assistant. Jordan is also a recent Booker T. Washington HSPVA graduate, where she was a member of Repertory Dance Company I. Jordan aspires to become a dancer with a contemporary ballet company after receiving her BFA in Dance. This sum- mer, Jordan attended Alonzo King LINES Ballet Summer Program.
