2015 Dance Council Scholarship Recipients
Madison Hicks Jerry Bywaters & Calloway Cochran Scholarship
Madi Hicks is a Booker T. Washington HSPVA alumni and currently attends The Julliard School. She also trained at various studios in the Dallas area. She was a 2013 YoungArts winner for modern dance and a 2014 US Presidential Scholar of the Arts Nominee/ Semifinalist. Madi was also honored to be one of the top three for Dance SpiritMagazine’s 2013 Cover Model Search. This summer, Madi attended the prestigious School at Jacob’s Pillow.
Mylaka Hicks Amber Strauser Scholarship
Mykayla started dancing at the age of 3 and now attends Dance Industry Performing Arts Center, where she is a member of the performing company. She returns to Booker T. Washington HSPVA as a sopho- more this fall, a place where she feels she has increased her creativity and expressiveness. This summer she attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance Summer Intensive Program.
Aditya Iswara ICHR Scholarship
Aditya Iswara has been learning Bharatanatyam from his mother, Vani Iswara, for the past eight years. Recently he, along with two of his high school friends, organized a grand Indian classical music and dance festi- val bringing together over 200 performers from leading institutes of Dallas area to raise over $15,000 for Make A Wish Foundation. He is also currently training in Indian classical music to embellish his dance. Aditya attended a summer workshop by the renowned Shijith Nambiar.
Katarina Jakimier Beth Wortley Ballet Scholarship
Katarina Jakimier is a home-schooled freshman honors student and dances at the Texas Ballet Theater School in Dallas. Katarina was featured in the January 2015 issue of Dance SpiritMagazine after establishing the Dallas Pointe Shoe Recycling Program, for which she earned the Girl Scout’s 2nd-highest honor, the Silver Award. This year, Katarina attended the Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive.
Rutuja Joshi Arathi School of Dance Scholarship
Rutuja Joshi is 16 years old, and a junior at Coppell High School. She started dancing when she was five and at eight years, she joined the Arathi School of Dance to learn the Indian classical dance style of Bharatanatyam. Rutuja completed her Arangetram in the summer of 2012 under Guru Shalini Varghese. She attended a workshop by the renowned Shijith Nambiar this summer.

Jessica Kinnaman Kittie LaPointe Peterson Memorial Scholarship
Jessica Kinnaman started training as a ballet dancer at The Kirov academy at the age of ten and is currently at the Akhmedova Ballet Academy in Silver Spring, MD. Recently, Jessica attended the Tanzolymp Dance Festival in Germany and took 1st place in the ballet category. Jessica will study at the Akhmedova Ballet Academy Cape Cod Summer Intensive this year.
Reagan Lawthers Nadyne Legere Memorial Scholarship
Reagan Lawthers is a graduating senior at Westlake Academy and trains at North Central Ballet in Keller, TX. Currently, she is auditioning for both university dance programs and professional ballet companies. This summer, Reagan attended the Colorado Ballet Academy Summer Intensive.
Hannah Lee Gene Pflug Scholarship
Hannah Lee started dancing at age three. She has per- formed with Drawbacks Youth Tap Ensemble and Rhythmic Souls Youth Residency and currently attends The Dallas Conservatory. Hannah’s other interests include singing, acting, stage management, and gym- nastics. This summer, Hannah attended the Tapestry Dance Academy intensive.
Rachel Lee Darryl Sneed Scholarship
Rachel Lee is a sophomore at Booker T. Washington HSPVA and currently attends Imagery in Motion Dance in Argyle, TX where she is a member of the Encore Competition Elite Team. Rachel was Breakout Artist Finalist for both Nuvo and Jump Competition/Convention, and has won several more competition titles. This summer, Rachel attended Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s Summer Intensive.
Brooke Marvel Nita Braun Memorial Scholarship
Brooke Marvel has been dancing since the age of three in all genres. Over the last year she has changed her focus to musical theater and tap. Brooke plans to per- fect her tap technique attending the American Tap Dance Center and Tap City in New York this summer.
