8. Computer and Wi-Fi access. If you want to get those kids out of the house, make sure that your Wi-Fi system is strong enough to reach into the yard. They may still glue them- selves to a screen, but trust me, nature has a way of distracting even the most die-hard geek. And be sure there is access to power in case the batteries fail. Why not mount a camera at the front door so that you can see who’s calling while you are tucked away in


the back? There are many systems that allow this now.


When you count work and winter, we live in an enclosed system for too much of our lives, breathing in chemical compounds and absorbing artificial light. Our yard should be as individual as our homes, with all the creature comforts and lots of orna- ments to delight the imagination. Taking full advantage of outdoor


living is no longer a luxury. It is as necessary to our health and growth as spring rain is to flowers. q
