WORLD NEWS IN BRIEF

PORTABLE POOL RETAILERS FINED IN AUSTRALIA In October, NSW Fair Trading and ACCC inspectors visited 436 retailers and found 41 were not complying with the new portable pool regulations which came into force earlier in the year.

Since 30 March, a new mandatory safety standard under the Australian

Consumer Law has applied to all suppliers of portable pools including sellers on ebay. A number of the non compliant traders were issued with $550 penalty notices, with 10 traders receiving formal warnings.

“The new Consumer Goods (Portable Swimming Pools) Safety Standard 2013 now requires all portable pools and their packaging to carry warning labels about the active supervision of children and the pools’ appropriate storage when not in use,” said NSW Fair Trading Minister Matthew Mason-Cox.

NY STATE SETTLES $5M CRYPTO SUIT After nine years of litigation and legal wrangling, New York State recently reached a settlement in a class action lawsuit stemming from a 2005 outbreak of cryptosporidium. Over 2,500 plaintiffs will share $5m paid by the state as reparations for infections suffered after being exposed to the waterborne disease at the Seneca Lake Spray Park from 1 June to 17 August 2005.

The settlement coincides

with the publication of the Model Aquatic Health Code, a sweeping document from the CDC, which includes calls for public aquatic facilities to utilise ‘secondary disinfection systems’ to combat cryptosporidium.

The secondary disinfection system is meant to

supplement chlorine, to which cryptosporidium and giardia have shown resistance over the last decade.

Australian Success For AstralPool Mac And Smart Pool

AstralPool’s smart pool has recently won the Environmental Award at the 2014 SPLASH! trade show thanks to its energy efficiency and functionality. These awards are given annually to the most environmentally friendly products and designs in the pool sector. The prize-giving ceremony took place on 17 July in the city of Gold Coast in Australia.

The jury of the SPLASH! awards – made up of renowned experts in the field of the construction and design of public and private pools – wished to reward the energy efficiency of AstralPool’s 3.0 pool, which in comparison with conventional pool maintenance systems makes it possible to save up to 50% in energy, 90% in chemical products and 50% in backwashing.

These are not the first international awards to have recognised the quality and innovation of AstralPool Mac. In 2013, the system won a Red Dot Award, one of the world’s major design awards, and in the same year the jury of the Plus X Awards, which are dedicated to innovative and environmentally friendly sport and lifestyle products, made AstralPool Mac its Product of the Year. The jury at the Barcelona International

Swimming Pool Exhibition also gave an award to AstralPool Mac in 2013 for its innovative system for controlling the pumping, filtration and chemical treatment equipment in a pool from a single compact device.

Furthermore, in the same week that the SPLASH! awards were given, AstralPool’s work was recognised with two other awards. The Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Australia (SPASA Australia) gave AstralPool’s Neolysis device (UV + salt chlorination) the Sustainability Award Product, and the Swimming Pool Retail Association Australia (SPRAA) made AstralPool its Retailer of the Year.

Interbad Becoming More Important Worldwide For Decision-Makers

Interbad closed its doors at the Stuttgart Trade Fair Centre exhibitors, visitors and organisers all being satisfied with the results. The event brought together 444 exhibitors and around 15,000 visitors from all over the world between 21 and 24 October 2014. “This year we had guests from 64 countries at interbad. The total proportion of foreign visitors was just under 30%,” said Ulrich Kromer, Managing Director of Messe Stuttgart, which organises interbad together with the German Association for the Recreational and Medicinal Bath Industry (DGfdB). A good quarter of foreign visitors came from Austria and Switzerland while other international visitors (just under 30%) travelled from Eastern Europe; 9% alone came from Russia. 12 per cent of foreign visitors came to Messe Stuttgart from Scandinavia. The increased internationality was also due to the first ‘International Business Day’ during the Congress for Pool and Bath Technology, which

was organised by the German Association for the Recreational and Medicinal Bath Industry (DGfdB) and attracted swimming pool experts from all over the world for personal exchanges of information and experiences. “The ‘International Business Day’ was extremely interesting

for all participants. It was a successful start for this new concept,” said Dr Christian Ochsenbauer, Managing Director of the DGfdB. There was also an increase in the number of international exhibitors at interbad (41%). “The record number of international exhibitors is also reflected in the internationality of the visitors,” added Dr Ochsenbauer. The opinions expressed by visitors also confirmed the success of the coherent concept of interbad 2014 as a combination of a trade fair, a congress and an accompanying programme. Nearly every respondent (a total of 95%) believed that interbad will remain important or become even more important in future with 74% of visitors intending to come back to the event in 2016. The next interbad will be held at the Stuttgart Trade Fair Centre from 27 to 30 September 2016.
