espite significant costs, it seems there’s no stopping the interest in moving swimming pool floors for both commercial and high-end swimming pools, with pools up and down the country benefitting from the flexibility they offer. In the majority of instances, their inclusion allows the space that the pool occupies to be transformed into an alternative use area such as a games or entertaining room for a home or a sports hall for a leisure centre. Once in position, they also then provide the added benefit of being a fully safe and secure heat retaining cover, which reduces humidity and running costs.
On other occasions, it’s so that pool depths can be altered allowing for a much wider use of the pool and maximising its potential. Whatever the reason for their inclusion, moving pool floors are increasingly providing swimming pools across the UK and further afield with maximum flexibility and increased use at the touch of a button.

“The moving pool floor market is still buoyant if you forgive the pun, and we are experiencing a steady stream of enquiries for both commercial and domestic pool builds,” says Mark Watson of Wrightfield Ltd, adding: “We have also completed a number of refurbishments and renovations of existing moving pool floors, and repaired a number of failures on existing systems for good measure. The market stalled a little with the economy, but we are seeing an increase in private market inquiries as the top end of the housing market

starts to move. The driver for a moving floor in the domestic environment, apart from the wow factor, has always been the opportunity to use the pool hall for other functions.” The company have recently completed a project with a rubberised deck, which was designed as a safe indoor play area for the client’s children. “The mixed coloured finish provided a good surface for play with some cushioning to absorb impact, which made a refreshing change from the normal high end tiled finishes,” said Watson. Commercially, Wrightfield have seen an increase in the smaller training pools being developed with a moving floor as part of the design package. The focus being on an independent facility that can be used for dedicated training or classes, an important revenue stream, without adversely affecting activity in the main pool. Speaking on the latest developments, Watson said:
