Welcome to this month’s Dart Habour bulletin

local dignitaries and professional colleagues to recognise and show appreciation to them for their work in or around the harbour, over the past few months.

to manage and maintain, Dart Harbour needs to ensure they are checked regularly and if necessary replaced.

So the problem is what to do with

the used metal chains which then accumulate and are not needed any more. The solution – to team up with the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company and use their diesel engine work tug Titan to transport the scrap metal away. “We do accumulate quite a lot of scrap metal throughout the year,” explained Deputy Harbour Master Nick Clarance. “The chain is just part of the scrap metal which we accrue throughout the year and sell to Gorman Metals in Paignton.” He added: “With our storage yard

Neil Hockaday, Board Chairman Addressing the guests, Dart

Harbour Chairman Mr Hockaday explained Dart Harbour has undergone a Forward Vision public consultation with those connected with the river including commercial and leisure users. The resulting action plan will form the basis for Dart Harbour’s high level strategy for forthcoming years. “We’ve gathered over 800 users’

ideas and feedback over the past few months and are in the process of putting together a plan for the next ten years,” Neil said, adding that the report’s findings will be outlined in December at Dart Harbour’s annual public meeting. “There is a feeling sometimes that

Dart Harbour does what it wants but this has been an opportunity for the public to have their say. We are listening and will be guided by their thoughts. The action plan will set

at Hoodown adjacent to the railway line and access to Hoodown difficult, it seemed an obvious solution to use the steam train to transport the metal.” BOARD AWARD Kingswear’s Kit Noble has been

awarded Dart Harbour’s prestigious Young Champions Board Award. The award of £500 is presented to individuals or organisations that go the extra mile in working with young people on the river whether it’s motivating, training or supporting.

Kit has been helping to run the

junior sailing at the Royal Dart Yacht Club for 10 years. Despite running his own bed and breakfast business, Kit has found time to help on Saturday mornings, to take on the role of the club’s Royal Yachting Association principle and to run the annual Junior Sailing Week. Kit was delighted with his award and promptly declared that he would donate the money to the Club to further support its junior sailing.

STOLEN TENDER The dangers of ‘borrowing’ tenders have been highlighted

again after one man ended up in the river in the middle of the night. The man is believed to have consumed alcohol and ‘borrowed’ a tender at around 3am to cross from Dartmouth to Kingswear. Unfortunately, the tender capsized before reaching the shore and the man had to cling on to a nearby yacht. Luckily his shouts for help were heard and he was rescued by a visiting yachtsman. “This matter is very serious. We would like to remind everyone of the dangers the river can pose,” said Harbourmaster Capt Rob Giles. “This gentleman was extremely lucky that his shouts for help were heard by another yachtsman who was able to rescue him. The consequences of his actions could have been fatal.” WATER TAXI Dart Harbour’s water taxi is now running to its winter timetable. It will be available between10am to 4pm seven days a week (except Christmas Day and New Years Day).
