Fabulous foodie presents Food & Drink
about giving Christmas presents – bah humbug! I love Christmas time, all the lead up to it, planning presents and wondering what to give friends and family this year. As you can imagine, foodie presents are high on our list of gifts for giving. Lovely if you can make your own and if you have time to do so, but equally lovely are ones you can buy locally. However, if you are having trouble coming up with some ideas, here are a few to top the traditional tin of Quality street.

✯ Beautifully wrapped jars of preserves are delicious and there’s still lots of time to get them made - lemon curd, Christmas mincemeat, Boxing Day chutney, pickled onions or how about Chestnut jam from James ramsden’s latest book – Do Ahead Christmas. this year has been a bumper year for chestnuts and James’ recipe is a good way to use them up (as well as the more traditional way of using them in stuffing for the turkey )
✯ Cheese straws and biscuits are good if you have some last minute time to rustle these up. Much nicer than bought ones especially if you use some local mature Cheddar such as Quickes or even a sharpham rustic with herbs. We use a foot shaped cutter to produce cheesey feet! If you do run out of time, buy some of rayne’s cheese straws from the Dart to Mouth Deli in the Market square – perfect!
✯ Figgy’s Puddings make a great Christmas Pudding and if you didn’t pick one up at the Dartmouth Food Festival, you can stock up at Candlelit. serve with clotted cream or brandy butter.
✯ If you’re sending presents, the weight of the parcel is a potential problem. you want a nice big present but it costs a fortune to send. Cloud nine Marshmallows are the solution to this problem – you might have seen them at the Food Festival where they

exhibited for the first time. the marshmallows are handmade, beautifully wrapped, come in a range of grown up flavours such as lemon meringue or salted caramel peanut and weigh next to nothing. even better, they’ll send them for you. Do have a look at their website –

✯More great pressies for sending through the post are vouchers and most companies can sort these out for you – either for a favourite restaurant or hotel, a trip on the Picnic Boat on the river for when it’s warmed up a bit or a cooking class here at the Manna cooking school. Christmas is a busy time for us for sending out vouchers and it’s a good solution if you have forgotten someone as they can be sent out right to the wire. Our last one in 2013 was emailed at 8pm on Christmas eve!
✯Cook books are a firm favourite and this year’s editions are some of the best yet – tom Parker Bowles Let’s Eat Meat; James ramsden’s Do Ahead Christmas, as already mentioned; an endless stream of baking books – both bread and cakes; and even The Breaking Bad Cook Book with a section on prison food... Let the Community Bookshop know what you’d like and they can order it in for you if they don’t already stock it.
✯Beautiful ceramics and stylish kitchen equipment are highly desirable to keen cooks and Dartmouth’s shops are a great treasure trove for these, especially our fabulous Kitchen shop in Foss street. Pat sources gorgeous goodies, many of which you won’t find elsewhere, so lovely you may be tempted to keep them yourself. I’m sure you can come up with lots more foodie ideas but these are just a few to get you started. Our
final idea is to offer a few hours of help to the Dartmouth Food Bank who are always in need of food basics or volunteers. you can contact Dawn the organiser via the council - all welcome!
