1. Cameroon, Syria and Pakistan as current exporters of WPV should ensure all residents and long-term visitors (over 4 weeks) receive a dose of oral polio vaccine (OPV) or inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) between 4 weeks and 12 months before international travel with proof of immunisation.
2. Other polio-affected countries are encouraged to vaccinate residents and long-term visitors before international travel.
This group comprises Afghanistan, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Israel, Nigeria and Somalia. Pakistan, as the most serious exporter, certainly is trying to implement these recommendations to the best of their ability.
2014 Poliovirus Statistics to 03/06/14: - 89 cases in 9 countries in 2014 v. 45 in 5 countries in 2013 for the same period. • Nigeria – 3 cases in 2014 v. 24 in 2013. • Afghanistan – 4 cases this year v. 2 cases in 2013. • Pakistan – 71 cases this year v. 9 last year in the same period. • Equatorial Guinea 3 and Iraq 2 suffer their first cases for 15 years. • Outbreak from Nigeria into Horn of Africa started in May 2013 and in 2014 just 2 cases – 1 has occurred (in Ethiopia) on 5th Jan and this week we have a report of a case in Somalia.
So this seems to have been brought under control for the present. But it could flare up again any moment as there are over 500,000 children thought to have missed vaccination in Somalia.
