£ STN presenters Denny Coughlin, left, and Bret E. Brooks are spearheading a SWAT-school bus exercise with the local Washoe County Sheriff's Office. Coughlin and Brooks both said the event on July 27 will open attendees eyes as to how law enforcement reacts to a school bus emergency.

but became more about how we travel and commute. It’s critical. Te school bus is a very good symbol of that.”

EXPO, the conference also will feature about four-dozen workshops and panel discussions. While the EXPO officially starts on Saturday, July 26 with the annual Child Passenger Safety for School Buses eight-hour class approved by NHTSA for the correct securement of child safety seats, the following day is a blockbuster. STN presenters Bret E. Brooks of Gram

Ram Tactical LLC and Denny Coughlin of the School Bus Safety Company are teaming with the Washoe County Sheriff ’s Office S.W.A.T to provide an interactive extravaganza in the parking lot of the Grand Sierra Resort. Tere, attendees will watch S.W.A.T. deputies execute several responses to different incidents occurring on the school bus, including an armed hostage situation. It will be the latest hands-on event featured at the EXPO, which in the past has presented a mock-casualty event involving a school bus and emergency evacuations. Brooks, who is also a full-time police officer in Missouri and a former captain of the Missouri Army National Guard, said at- tendees will take away a greater knowledge and understanding of school bus hijacking situations bywitnessing — and potentially being able to participate in — a full-scale police response to a school bus hijacking. "Attendees will learn some basic infor-

mation that they can use to assist respond- ing police officers along with some key factors relating to how to avoid a school bus hijacking," he added. "With recent tragedies involving school bus hijackings this should be a must attend event." Coughlin, who has trained law enforcement

agencies, added that a moderator will also ex- plain the operation and answering questions. "Tis is a rare opportunity to learn how

law enforcement reacts to our emergencies," he said. 
