Safety Awards 2.0 BY JIM ANDERSON

Vice Chairman, FTA Safety Management Council During the January 2013 Safety

Management Council meeting, a motion was made and approved to form a workgroup of SMC members to review the current Safety Awards selection process. The primary objective of the workgroup was to identify improvements to the selection process with the goal of increasing participation from member companies. An open request for volunteers to

participate on the workgroup was made to all SMC members. Seven members accepted the opportunity; Larry Hicks – Publix, Robert Foskey – UPS Freight, Bobby Walley – Winn Dixie, Charles Howell – Burris Logistics, Herman Fauss – Member of Honor, Kayla Davis – Davis Express, Jim Anderson – Florida Rock & Tank Lines.

• Transparency - The concept of having an independent panel of judges to make final selection of Driver of Year winner was discussed. All of the Workgroup members felt this was needed to enhance the integrity and transparency of the selection process. This is similar to other FTA award selections such as the Herman Fauss Scholarship where independent judges make the final selection.

• Update Outdated Criteria – The Workgroup reviewed the current documents used in the Driver of Month and Fleet Safety contests. A number of line items were deleted such as “Highway Watch” as they were no longer relevant. One addition to the Driver of the Month score sheet was to include an opportunity to earn points for the number of consecutive years of accident free driving a driver had. Once the Workgroup was in agreement with the revisions to the various documents, new documents were created to replace the ones currently in use.

After a general discussion, the

Workgroup identified specific areas for improvement: transparency, update outdated criteria, and create a tracking “chain of custody” document.

Florida Truck News Q1 WINTER 2014

• Chain of Custody – To keep track of the various documents, a new Chain of Custody form was created. This will require the member company to verify each entry submitted. On receipt by the FTA office, all contents will be reviewed and verified as received. The member company will receive a verified receipt from the FTA office. The Chain of Custody form will remain with the member company’s application documents until they are judged. The reviewing judge will verify each application has been judged. This process will do all that is reasonable to ensure all entries which are received are judged. The Driver of the Month/ Driver of the Year Award Selection Process will consist of

two tiers. The first tier of judging will be performed by the SMC Executive Committee as it is done currently. The Committee will select the twelve Drivers of the Month based of total points awarded. In tier two, the twelve Drivers of the Month winner applications will then be forwarded to the Independent Judging Panel comprised of highway safety experts who will select the Driver of the Year. For the Fleet Safety Award, the

Committee will bracket the mileage classes based on entries and select the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for each freight category based on their Florida DOT Recordable Accident Frequency Ratio. The Workgroup reviewed the Safety

Professional of the Year contest with only one change, to require all submitted documents to be placed in a three-ring binder. In conclusion, the Workgroup was

committed to improving the Safety Awards selection process to promote greater participation. The Workgroup believes the proposed changes reflect the thoughts and comments of many SMC members. By doing so, the Workgroup believes this will inspire participation and help grow the SMC membership. Many thanks go out to all who volunteered their time and effort to serve on this Workgroup. FTN

Our first Safety Awards nominations using the new criteria are under review and will be announced on May 24 at the combined TDC/ Safety Awards Banquet in Tampa. Jim Anderson is VP Safety & Human Resources with Florida Rock & Tank Lines, Inc.
