AN-124-100 IS ‘DRIVING RUSSIA’S LEADERSHIP OF THE UNIQUE, OUTSIZE AIR CARGO MARKET’

Volga-Dnepr Airlines has showcased the unique operating capability of its Antonov An-124-100 ‘Ruslan’ freighter to delegates at the 11th International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS 2013 in Moscow.

The event provided an opportunity to demonstrate the aircraft’s ability to provide logistics solutions for outsize and heavyweight air cargo on behalf of customers in a broad range of industry sectors, including aerospace, oil and gas, and heavy engineering as well as for humanitarian and peacekeeping cargoes.

Addressing the International Aviation Congress under the topic of ‘Progress in aircraft engineering and the new look of the all-freight service market’, Dennis Gliznoutsa, Vice President, Development,

Volga-Dnepr Airlines, said: “23 years ago, Volga-Dnepr created a new area of the air cargo market for the global transportation of unique, outsize and super-heavy shipments and over the last two decades has become the world leader in this market because of the operational qualities of the An-124-100 ramp freighter.

This has also been supported by the development of loading equipment systems for unique outsize cargo and has given Volga-Dnepr Airlines the

“Russia is ready to take a leading position in this market right now thanks to the experience of operating An-124-100 aircraft, its involvement in the production of this outstanding plane, and the rapidly expanding aviation logistics sphere with the entry into the Russian market of so- called ‘cargo supermarket’ companies. Volga-Dnepr is a leader among them.”

VOLGA-DNEPR COMPLETES SERIES OF AEROSPACE FLIGHTS FOR ASTRIUM

Volga-Dnepr Airlines has completed a series of flights delivering space equipment for Astrium GmbH, a German division of Europe’s largest aerospace company.

Three Swarm satellites arrived onboard three Volga-Dnepr Airlines’ IL-76TD-90VD freighter flights at Plesetsk Cosmodrome from Munich, Germany, following an intermediate stop in Archangelsk, Russia over a five-day period.

The satellites, which had a total weight of over 60 tons, required precise and sensitive loading to eliminate any risk of

damage. This was achieved using guide rails to load and unload the high value satellites. Representatives of Astrium GmbH were on hand to provide constant in-flight monitoring of the satellites, including the special temperature conditions that needed to be maintained inside the aircraft’s cargo compartment. The satellites were successfully unloaded at Plesetsk airfield and then trucked to the integration facility at Plesetsk Cosmodrome.

The Swarm is the third project in the series of Earth Explorer missions implemented by the European Space Agency (ESA) under its Living Planet Programme to analyse in unprecedented detail the Earth’s geomagnetic field and its evolution over time. The Swarm constellation consists of three satellites that will be launched simultaneously from Plesetsk Cosmodrome, located some 800km north of Moscow, on a single rocket launch vehicle in November 2013.

Another IL-76TD-90VD flight delivered 15 tons of equipment, mainly comprising Astrium-developed Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec), from Munich to Baltimore, USA. The NIRSpec is intended for a large, infrared-optimised space telescope known as the James Webb Space Telescope, which is due to be launched on Ariane 5 in 2018. It will be used to explore the first stars and galaxies that formed in the early Universe after the Big Bang.
