Massage Therapy for People Living with Cancer

ot long ago, massage

therapists were taught that it was contraindicated to work with cancer patients. It is now known that mas- sage therapy is very beneficial in many cases, and oncolo- gists are often recommending massage as an adjunctive treatment. Cancer is a complex disease. Therapists who wish to work safely and effectively with people living with cancer need train- ing. The Peregrine Institute of Oncology Massage Training (PIOMT) addresses that need by offering basic and ad- vanced courses. Birthed under the aus- pices of the Santa Fe School of Massage (formerly Scherer Institute) PIOMT will offer its two basic courses this fall. Portland, Oregon resident Gayle MacDonald, an international teacher and the author of Medicine Hands: Massage Therapy for People with Cancer and Massage for the Hospital Patient and Medically Frail Client will teach “Massage for People Living with Cancer.” Santa Fe’s own Sandy Can- zone, Doctor of Oriental Medicine, will be teaching her “Eastern Perspectives” course using Eastern bodywork points, special Ayurvedic oils, foot reflexology and heated stones. Even though Dr. Canzone’s protocols are very specific, her philosophy goes deeper to embrace a wide perspective of the power of touch. She says, “That hour is all about them, their wholeness—not just their symptom, their disease.”

MacDonald’s course will be held September 30 to October 2. Tuition is $450. Canzone’s two-part course will be October 4-6 and November 8-10. Tuition is $1,080. Classes, held at Santa Fe School of Massage, are open to licensed Massage Therapists. Call 505- 995-9799 or visit PeregrineInstitute. com for information. See ad page 16.
