Health Care As you settle into your new home, you will want to make

decisions about health care providers for you and your family. The First Coast is blessed to have a wide selection of medical providers and facilities. No doubt, the quality and caring professionals you desire are available here. This section will get you started on finding the right medical care.

Many hospitals, clinics and other health care facilities on

the First Coast are well-known for excellence and frequently receive awards and recognition. In July 2012, Mayo received an "A" rating for excellence in patient safety from the Leapfrog Group, a national leader and advocate in hospital quality and patient safety. Baptist Health ranked among the top hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for diabetes/endocrinology, gynecology and pediatrics. In September 2012, Memorial Hospital was named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by the Joint Commission. This is the second year in a row Memorial has earned this important distinction.

Keeping up with the latest technology helps local facilities

provide the best possible care. For instance, St. Vincent's Medical Center Riverside has the region's only Gamma Knife® Perfexion™

to treat malignant and benign brain tumors by

using radiation in a non-invasive, one-day visit. Since the procedure is done in an outpatient setting, it is less expensive than brain surgery. Baptist Health uses the da Vinci®

S-Robot

for accurate, minimally invasive surgical procedures. Many other local hospitals and surgery centers are currently using advanced technology and aspire to gain new equipment and perform new procedures as technology continues to advance.

Education plays an important role in health care as well.

UF Health Jacksonville is home to the University of Florida’s colleges of medicine, nursing, dentistry and pharmacy. Other local organizations, like St. Vincent’s Healthcare, offer accredited continuing education programs to provide medical professionals with quality education that implements new knowledge, teaches new skills, reviews techniques and develops appropriate physician-patient relationships. St. Vincent's also provides specialty certifications in imaging technologies including nuclear, radiological and sonography.

At Mayo Clinic, research departments continually search for ways to improve patient care. Mayo’s researchers study digestive diseases, diabetes, cancer, neurological disorders and many other illnesses and diseases covering all areas of medicine. In addition, patients at Mayo Clinic often participate in clinical trials.

To meet the needs of a growing community, health care

facilities on the First Coast are continually expanding. Baptist Health opened a new 11-story patient tower to provide 167 beds for patients at Wolfson Children's Hospital and its sister hospital, Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville. In October 2013, St. Vincent's Healthcare plans to open a new 64-bed hospital in Clay County. In mid-2013, Brooks Rehabilitation will open its Bartram Campus, which will include a 100-bed skilled nursing facility, a three-story, 61-unit assisted living facility and two Green House-trademarked 12-bed memory care homes.

In addition to full-service hospitals, primary care and

urgent care clinics are growing in popularity and number. Organizations like Borland-Groover and CareSpot have locations throughout the First Coast.

Why stay in the hospital when your procedure can be

performed at an ambulatory surgery center? The First Coast is home to a number of surgery centers. These quality facilities will have you in and out, and on your way home, in no time. For those looking for long-term care for a loved one, the First Coast Relocation Guide includes listings of local Assisted Living Facilities and Nursing Homes starting on page 67.

Florida’s First Coast offers great health care services and

many choices of providers and facilities. Because we have a multitude of hospitals, clinics, surgery and imaging centers, patients can find what they seek, without settling for less than satisfactory treatment. Whatever your needs, the First Coast can meet them with quality facilities and care.
