OCTOBER 2012
new exhibitions Pelham Art Center
Lisa Davis, Groundless Construct
Before Google Maps and GPS devices, paper maps were the standard resource for travelers. Not only were maps informative, but they were often beautifully designed and evoked hope in those who dreamt of exploring the world. Pelham Art Center’s current exhibi-
tion, Anywhere But Here, explores the art of maps and map-making, and is on view through October 27.

Highlighted in the exhibition is the artistic nature of cartography and a map’s ability to act both func- tionally and as a tool for “stirring feelings of nostal- gia, longing and escape,” says Gallery and Public Program Manager Laura Nicholas. “Those are feelings to which everyone can relate." Maps have historically inspired humans to define, describe and navigate their surroundings. The fifteen artists fea- tured in this exhibition explore their personal inter- pretations of maps through various mediums. For more information, visit:

Clay Art Center Susan Beiner, Remnant
Clay Art Center’s latest solo exhibition, Organic Dissolution, contem- plates the negative short and long term effects of human obstruction on nature. When natural objects are both literally and figuratively injected with science and man- ufactured materials,
one is left to wonder if anything is organic anymore. The exhibition will run from October 13–November 21, with a reception on October 13 from 6-8pm.
Artist Susan Beiner’s wonderfully chaotic ceramic and mixed media sculptures examine what happens to nature when it is broken apart, over-processed and industrialized. The Center will be transformed to explore a juxtaposition of the natural with the unnatu- ral. Beiner will lead a one-day demonstration work- shop on October 13 from 10am-5pm entitled “Synthetic Reality: Altering Nature with Susan Beiner.” For more information, visit:

Hudson River Museum
Jerry Pinkney, detail from The Lion and the Mouse book
Hudson River Museum (HRM) has the honor of being the only New York stop for the nationally-touring Witness: The Art of Jerry Pinkney exhi- bition. On view
through January 13, Witness is a won-
derful collection of more than 120 watercolor illus- trations spanning the history of Pinkey’s lustrous career illustrating over 100 American picture books.
A long-time Westchester resident (and a recipient of one of ArtsWestchester’s 2012 Arts Awards), the exhibition highlights works of art that not only tell the story in its printed pages but also weave in tales of Pinkney’s own life. A storyteller at heart, Pinkney speaks most loudly with his pencil and paintbrush. Says HRM Director Michael Botwinick: “We are delighted to offer such a full collection of [Pinkney’s] work… and by extension to bring the magic of read- ing and drawing to the many children we see at the Museum.” For more information, visit:
