“My favorite place to travel and take photographs is anywhere in nature. The more time I spend in Southwest Florida the more I learn, and the more I want to capture the different interactive facets of nature. I’ve been in places like Cuba, where capturing the story of the people has been so powerful that only my photographs can exemplify what I really experienced.” – JOSH MANRING

Josh Manring’s gallery name – Journeyman – really says it all. Since 1998, this local photographer has traveled to more than 50 coun- tries, capturing images that tell the story of an area through rich, visual representations of his experiences with people, animals, plants and landscapes. His gallery showcases his work, including his latest collection of Southwest Florida’s flora and fauna, but is more than just a place to view static images. Manring also teach- es photography workshops for both the novice and experienced photographer, leads photography tours locally and abroad, and opens his space for presentations, workshops and yoga.

At press time, Manring just returned from photographing his next collection, trekking through the Alaskan wilderness and exploring places like the Aleutian Islands and a small village in Kodiak Is- land called Larson Bay. Pulse Magazine SWFL was able to catch up with the literal journeyman during his latest adventure to learn more about his work and upcoming trips.

What inspired you to capture images of SW Florida in your latest collection? My latest images were part of a collaborative project with Florida Gulf Coast University. I received a grant to create a visual presentation for a summer reading book about SWFL’s landscapes, flora and fauna. Many of my images from the FGCU presentation are on display at the Journeyman Gallery.

Did anything happen while you were shooting? Any noteworthy encounters with wildlife? My four most memorable experiences shooting for this project all happened on the same day (July 4, 2010) while traveling through the Picayune Strand State Forest and the Fakahatchee Strand State Pre- serve. My photography buddy Jim and I saw a Florida black bear, a resting swallow tail kite (which is rare), a ghost orchid in bloom – and to cap the entire day off, I saw my first ever Florida panther.

Do you have a favorite image from this collection? It’s hard to pick a favorite. I need to qualify a couple of the photo- graphs… my luckiest photograph was a lightning shot over the Gulf of Mexico at Wiggins Pass State Park. My favorite bird photograph is of a painted bunting at Corkscrew Swamp, and one of my favorite landscapes is a sunrise at Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest.

What kind of camera do you use? Film or digital? The Journeyman Gallery exhibits both my 35mm and digital images. I began shooting in 1992 and made the switch to digital in 2005. In the past couple of years I have owned both the Canon 5D and Canon 5D Mark II, and I plan to purchase the Canon 5D Mark III. CONT.
