BELFAST HARBOUR
AN IMPORTANT MARITIME HISTORY The City of Belfast and its port have a long and distinguished maritime history, the city being home to what was at one time, the world’s largest shipyard, Harland & Wolff.
In the 21st century, the city’s port, managed and operated by Belfast Harbour Commissioners since 1847, is at the heart of a new maritime revolution based around the marine renewable energy sector.
OFFSHORE WIND INSTALLATION Belfast Harbour has been involved with offshore wind turbine installation projects as far back as 2005, having worked closely with Harland & Wolff on the three Irish Sea offshore installation projects it has successfully managed from its facilities in Belfast Harbour, making the port one of the leading logistics locations for Irish Sea offshore wind projects.
INVESTMENT In a further strengthening of its offering for this sector, Belfast Harbour is presently midway through the construction of a new £50m offshore wind logistics terminal which will used by DONG Energy to construct its portfolio of offshore wind projects in the Irish Sea. The facility, due for completion in October 2012, will be the UK’s first purpose built offshore wind facility comprising a 480m long, deep water heavy duty quay, together with a 50 acre heavy duty hinterland area.
LONG TERM COMMITMENT In early 2013, DONG Energy (together with its project partner, Scottish Power Renewables) will commence construction of the 367MW West of Duddon Sands Offshore Wind Farm from its new base in Belfast, signalling the start of many years of offshore wind logistics activity which will cement Belfast Harbour’s position as the number one offshore wind logistics hub for the Irish Sea.
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT In addition to the development for DONG Energy, Belfast Harbour has a number of other strategic development sites, totalling some 100 acres, which are suitable for large scale manufacturing and logistics activity in the offshore renewables sector.
DELIVERING INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS Crucially, Belfast Harbour has the expertise and track record of delivering of major port infrastructure projects in shortened timescales and thus is the perfect port partner for the offshore wind sector.
