MANAGEMENT OF CORROSION IN STEEL MARINE STRUCTURES


An extremely hostile environment calls for specialist focused attention


Marine structures suffer accelerated corrosion due to the environment in which they are placed and operate.


Location and access difficulties often preclude regular maintenance allowing corrosion to continue and accelerate.


PROTECTIVE COATINGS


There is long history with paint systems and the combination of paint systems and cathodic protection but there is little evidence of long maintenance free life in excess of twenty years with these systems, which require maintenance to ensure complete steel protection under these aggressive conditions.


SOLUTION


One resolution to this problem is high build solvent free polyurethane tightly bonded to the steel surface to provide both corrosion resistance and impact and abrasion resistance.


There is over twenty five years proven maintenance free performance with solvent free polyurethane on marine structures which offers the following advantages over conventional paint systems.


• Economy – material cost per litre would be similar to other liquid paint systems although total cost will be higher because of increased film thickness to 1mm to 1.5mm but this is off set by longer maintenance free life reducing or eliminating maintenance costs


Such ongoing maintenance has proven to be difficult and costly to implement resulting in many offshore and marine structures reaching a critical state before action is taken, which in turn accelerates the on cost.


• Environmental – solvent Free. No V.O.C. The total resin blend is based on the use of safe polymers free from coal tar and bitumen based raw materials
