percent faith and confidence in him. I know he can jump the world. I’m a very lucky girl.” Coming in just 0.1 points behind Dinan and
Vancouver, Zone 4 rider Samantha Senft, 21, Wellington, FL, and the nine-year-old Canadian-bred Warmblood mare Early Morning took the Young Rider silver medal. Early Morning is owned by Summer Seas Farm, Boca Raton, FL, and Senft.

to have down, it was the first one,” Schaefer said after her ride. “Then you’re riding the rest of your round thinking, ‘I can’t have any more.’ I knew I had a little bit of a cushion in that if I had one down I’d have to jump off, but it wasn’t what we planned. The jump- off was nice and short. The first day when I walked the course I thought [the jumps looked] low, but today when I was walking
I thought it looked a lot bigger. I was able to ride her smoother because the bigger jumps helped her.” Zone 4’s Frances Land, 17, Alpharetta, GA, riding her 11-year-old British Warmblood gelding Merlin took the

“My horse is not an easy horse. I have the mare nobody
could ride. She’s such a princess. All you can do is trail riding during the week and just a few warm-up jumps before going into the show ring. Before I go into the ring I have to sing Justin Bieber songs to her. I’m not kidding. If I don’t she will not perform as well,” Senft laughed. “Each jump is a huge accomplishment if we get over it clean. I know the first round my horse jumped really, really well, but got a little flat over the vertical I had down. Then she finished up phenomenal. I couldn’t have asked for a better round.” Winners of the Junior jumping gold medal were
Zone 3 rider Samantha Schaefer, 18, Westminster, MD, and Trezebees, a 15-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare by Cash, out of Quirinal, bred by Herman de Braboner and owned by Addison Phillips. The pair had only four faults total in five rounds of jumping, with their lone rail coming in the second individual round on the last day of competition, but they jumped the jump-off fast and clean to take the gold. This feat was even more amazing considering the temperatures in the high 90s and the very high humidity levels in Lexington the entire week of the competition.

silver medal in Junior jumpers. Merlin is by Magic Darco and out of Tarantella. “Merlin acts mean, but he is a teddy bear. I like to ride him bareback on the trails,” said Land. “He has a little bit of a breathing problem in that
he gets overheated quickly,” she explained. “We were a little tentative and worried about him this week. Between rounds we would sponge him off just to bring his body temperature down and I was making sure I was walking him enough. I was so proud. He felt super sound and he handled the heat and the rounds wonderfully. He felt great.”
