its family law services – the first UK firm to do so. The firm, which has an office in Birmingham, will now provide fixed fees for advice on a range of family law matters, including financial court proceedings on divorce, mediation and financial settlements. The new charging system will

provide clients with certainty over costs, transparency about the work that is done, and legal fees that are proportionate to the issues involved. The aim is to keep costs to a minimum by resolving disputes out of court and litigating only where necessary. For more complex matters involving arrangements such as trusts, jurisdictional issues, foreign assets or complex corporate structures, Mills & Reeve will either provide a clear estimate of what the fees will be, or a fixed price service tailored to individual circumstances. The launch follows the publication of recent figures

by the Legal Ombudsman’s Office that one in five complaints it received in the last year related to cost queries.

Roger Bamber, joint head of Mills & Reeve’s family law team, was recently named “most innovative family lawyer of the year” at the Family Law awards. The firm launched the website in 1998, providing free information and practical advice to help separated couples take control of the divorce process. This was the first website of its kind to be developed by a law firm in the UK, and has now been followed by a divorce iPhone app. Earlier this year the firm’s
