member 8-track tapes—or cas- sette tapes, for that matter— you probably remember a time when August was considered the last full month of summer, not the first month of autumn. It was a time when the coun-

ty fair came before the start of the public school year; when a summer job went until La- bor Day; and when mid August meant the chance for a late- season vacation. Now the seasons are deter-

mined not so much by the solar system, but by the school sys- tem. So here we are, it’s August.

It’s 90-something degrees out- side, but it feels like we’re all hunkering down for winter. Don’t give in. Keep your sum-

mer mojo; get out and about in Jefferson County. Here are a few ideas. There’s a new Friday farm-

ers market in Bakerton. Check it out. The Morgan’s Grove

market is still going strong of- fering up local bounty, as is the Charles Town market and the venerable one in Shepherd- stown. On August 7 there’s the first-

ever Shepherdstown Chalk Art Festival. North King Street and the sidewalks of German Street and South King will be abuzz in the work of nearly 30 art- ists. There will be music and all kinds of kids’ activities, too. Head to Charles Town for the

Third Thursday each month. Shops stay open late, restau- rants do something special, there’s music and fun in the streets, and a good time for people of all interests. You can support Jefferson

High School Marching Band just by going swimming. On August 10 from 6–9pm, head to the Jefferson Memorial Pool in Charles Town. They’re planning a fun evening of swimming, food, and music. Admission is $5 per person. Food, drinks,

and band merchandise will be available for purchase as well. Join the “Cougars at the Pool” to help raise money for much needed uniforms. How about this? On August

12 there will be a free fam- ily film shown outside in Shep- herdstown. It will be projected on the back wall of the Shep- herdstown Library, starting at dusk. Bring your own seating. The county fair gets going

August 20. Check out the sched- ule at http://jeffersoncounty- fairwv.org. And if you can still swing a getaway, read about close-by Assateague Island, only a few hours away. If you’ve never seen the ponies running on the beach, maybe this is your year. See Amy Mathews Amos’ story in this edition of The Observer. Don’t let the modern cal-

endar fool you. August is still a summer month in Jefferson County.
