“Rolfing”? What’s Tat? (A Key to Chronic Pain Relief, Tat’s What)
By Clay Evans
the morning; your feet and legs hurt, your back and neck ache. “Must be old age,” you say to your- self. But wait—you’re not that old. What’s the problem, then? Often it can be summed up in

two words: gravity and posture. As we stand, drive, sit at our
computers, and generally go about our daily lives, we forget that the earth’s gravitational field is con- stantly pulling us down. Gravity is a wonderful thing when it’s work- ing with us. It keeps our feet on the ground and helps us run, walk and move about. But when we get out of line with gravity, the misery begins. Consider how much time you
spend at a desk and the position you remain in most of that time. Chairs don’t fit the human body well, so you might spend hours with your shoulders slumped, your lower back rounded out, and your hips planted in an unnatural position. If you work at a computer, your arms stay extended toward a mouse or key- board, while your neck and head strain to see the screen. Now compare this scenario to how you drive, watch TV or relax at home. Before long you’ll begin to notice the same pattern of posture in many aspects of your life.

ts 7 a.m., the alarm is buzzing, and you’re dreading getting up. The stiffness is always worse in
No wonder we hurt. Our
bodies are at war with gravity! Over time, we lose the energetic, upright stance we had when we were four. And along with poor posture and repetitive movements come pain that just doesn’t go away.
Injuries only make things
worse. Remember that fall from your bike a few years ago? It still might bring on a seemingly un- explainable soreness. Our bodies compensate for injuries by shifting our balance, which only exacer- bates the discomfort. If we injure the left ankle, we will instinctively favor the right one, which then can suffer pain from overuse. Compen- sation is natural, but it begins to work against us as time progresses. All of this involves the con-
nective tissue system called fascia, which surrounds our muscles, bones and organs, shapes muscles, and gives structure to the body.
When fascia becomes restricted from poor posture, injury and overuse, it begins to lose its elasticity, which in turn begins to prohibit and restrict movements throughout the body. The result is pain, low energy, and an overall sense of fatigue. The good news is you don’t have to live in pain. Your
fascia responds to touch, which can help restore its elasticity, thus allowing your body to do what it wants to do naturally:
