adjustments by Dr. Downey with the VOM technique. (VOM is a technique of veterinary orthopedic manipulation which makes spinal adjustments using an activator.) Throughout this whole ordeal, I did not ride or even lunge Ruslan. I only hand walked him through the winter months so as not to put added pressure on his joints. Dr. Downey noted that it’s

syringe. Then Dr. Downey re-evaluated all of Ruslan’s supplements and nutrition. We switched his current supplements to ReitSport HA-100 (which contains Hyaluronic Acid, Glucosamine HCL, Chondroitin Sulfate, MSM and Vitamin C), then rotated in Grand HA, the herb Una de Gato, DMG by VetriScience and Proviable by Nutramax (a probiotic to take care of his gut which was given for the duration of the Doxycycline and two weeks beyond), Missing Link, a nutritional supplement, and homeopathic remedies for pain management and lymph drainage. Dr. Downey says digestive support is paramount in these cases because up to 70 percent of the lymph tissue is in the intestines. Ruslan also received regular monthly

typical for Lyme to settle in areas of the body already stressed or diseased. “Lyme has an affinity for joints and connective tissue. It can go anywhere. The problem with Lyme is that it mutates every few weeks,” explains Dr. Downey, “so for Ruslan, every few weeks we changed our therapeutic approach using herbs and nutritional supplements like the Una de Gato and the DMG. The organism actually changes itself so the immune system cannot recognize it.” Dr. Downey says the Doxycycline will treat infection but it doesn’t kill all micro-organisms deep within the cells and tissues. Some medical experts believe therein lies the conundrum of the disease. According to Dr. Betina Wagner

at Cornell University, who heads up the testing of Lyme disease and ongoing equine Lyme studies, prolonged use of antibiotics can actually be counterproductive. “I wouldn’t encourage follow up with

more antibiotic treatment,” she says. “If re-exposure occurs, there’s damage to the tissue and that needs time to repair.” In addition, she says, overuse of antibiotics will eventually deplete the immune system and hijack the body’s own healing mechanisms.

Unfamiliar Treatment The most noticeable change in Ruslan’s condition came

when Dr. Downey introduced a treatment unfamiliar in this country called the BICOM Optima. This is a computerized diagnostic and therapy tool that uses electrodes to diagnose and treat conditions with electromagnetic bioresonance. BICOM is relatively new to American
