olistic medicine means preventing or correcting the cause of disease with the goal of returning the body to its natural harmony, i.e. wellness, with


the use of as few drugs as possible. Holistic medicine, also referred to as complementary, alternative or integrative medicine, actually looks at the patient wholly, taking into account all aspects that affect the patient from nutrition to behavior and everything in between—not just looking at the presenting symptom. Not everyone is a believer in this approach to treating


physical problems for either animal or human, and some- times it takes personal experience with positive results before one is sold on its benefits. Many sport horse owners use various holistic methods regularly for maintaining their equine athletes, and many treat holistically for a serious condition in combination with traditional medicine. In my case, I believe holistic treatments cured my horse’s recent

bout with Lyme disease. My original introduction into the world of holistic medicine took some convincing. Seventeen years later, I’m worse than a reformed smoker in that I want everyone to experience another path to wellness for their animals through alternative medicine. When you read my story, you’ll understand why. In 2009, I became a new horse owner. Readers may


remember the story of my horse as Ruslan graced the pages of this magazine back in the spring of 2010. Readers journeyed with me as I told the story of how I came by this kind Russian Warmblood in the summer of 2009 and proceeded to track down his original owner who rode him to fourth level dressage. For the first ten years of his life, Ruslan was an elite athlete excelling in dressage competition from Vermont to Florida. When I acquired this gentle soul, he was 19 and showed the telltale signs
