fish and out came the Rapalas and Hula Poppers, lead-head jigs and the Daredevil. Artificials! Recently I have been using flies to

attract speckles, rainbows and splake. I don’t employ the traditional method of fly fishing. I use a large mooching reel with a 12-foot rod and sinking line and leader. As I get to a gentle trolling speed, I let the line out so my fly is about 12 to 20 feet deep. And then hang on to the whippy rod when a trout slams the fly! Artificials! Flies are designed to imitate the

preferred food of a fish. That Chinese guy way back probably knew that the cooked rice he was using looked very similar to maggots, and fish love maggots. My brother Jerry is a dedicated

stillwater fly fisherman. You will often find him sitting quietly in his float tube on some back country Calabogie trout lake, slowly presenting various artificial flies to greedy trout. He studies entomology and habitat

and the day to day water conditions that are contributing factors to what the fish will be feeding on. With that knowledge, he will present a hand- tied contraption of feather and fur that imitates or closely resembles the natural food the fish are eating. On the same lake, you may see someone sitting on the shore, with a spinning rod propped up on a twig, soaking a worm or minnow under a bobber. It really doesn’t matter whether

you are a dedicated bait fisherman or you prefer to try and trick a fish with a spoon, spinner or fly. Either technique can be rewarding. Nothing compares to the the sight

of a quiet misty morning, the sound of a screaming drag, a splash, the bend in the rod and then a well-played fish in the net. Don’t forget this definition of

fishing: “A jerk on the end of the line waiting for a jerk on the end of the line.”
