Outside the BOx

Robin Henderson guides you through how bands like the Rolling Stones and Rage Against the Machine come up with some of their best riffs…using alternative tunings.

Start with ‘Drop D’ tuning (Ex.1). Tune the low ‘E’ string a whole tone down to ‘D’ (DADGBE). This creates a ‘D’ power chord on the thickest 3 open strings allowing you to play power chords all along the neck, simply using a bar across one fret. Open G tuning (Ex.2 & 3): Starting with the

‘Drop D’ , drop the A string a tone to ‘G’ and lower the high ‘E’ string to ‘D’ (DGDGBD). All tuned down? Great! Now you can play an open ‘G’ chord rooting from the 5th string and repeat chords using a bar across the 5 strings. E.g. a bar across the 5th fret would make a ‘C’ chord. Add your 2nd finger to the 6th fret ‘B’ string and your 3rd to 7th fret ‘D’ string creating a Sus 4(add13) chord; sound a bit familiar? This is Keith Richard’s favourite tuning, now you can riff just like the Rolling Stones! For a classic blues sound, try using a slide on

your 3rd or 4th finger (Ex.4), it works a treat now the strings are tuned to a chord! Also worth a mention is Open ‘E’ tuning

(Ex.5). It’s exactly the same notes as an open ‘E’ chord (EBEG#BE). Root your chords from the thickest string and when adding the Sus chord you need to move your 2nd and 3rd fingers up to the ‘G’ and ‘A’ strings.

Ex1: In Drop D tuning, start with the open D5 chord and use your 1st and 2nd fingers to move quickly between the power chords in 8th notes. Use your 4th finger to bridge the gap between the 7th and 10th fret and slide up to the 12th fret octave before repeating.

Ex2: After playing the low D5, create a groove by pulling the A string from the 5th to 3rd fret and resting briefly on beat 3. Repeat the process with a pull between the 3rd and 2nd frets followed by the 1st fret to open string and palm mute the open D string pedal notes to get that fat ‘Rage’ sound.

Ex3: Riff like Keith Richards by tuning to Open G. Play a ‘C’ chord by using a bar on the 5th fret and add the sus4add13chord using your 2nd and 3rd fingers. Rest on beat 4 to create a groove and follow the pattern between the D# and A#chords. On bar 4, twist in a few pull offs and use the slide from the 3rd to 5th fret to turn the sequence around. C

Ex5: Tune up to Open E and use notes from the E Major scale to compliment the natural open chord. The slides, pulls and open strings give that bright, Country sound. Finish by ringing the harmonic chords on the 12th, 7th and 5th frets to draw out the character of this open tuning.

Ex4: Recommended with a slide on your 3rd or 4th finger. Start with the open G and slide up to the 3rd fret and back. From around the 10th fret, slide up to the octave and add vibrato by moving the slide swiftly either side of the 12th fret. For best results, rest the slide lightly on the strings, directly above the fret and don’t push the strings down to the fret board.
