e can hardly remember a time without cell phones and instant banking; or without immediate access to any piece of information we could ever need, from recipes to healthcare records, up-to-the-minute world news

to a family member’s travel itinerary. Some of these things, once seen as conve- niences, have become nothing less than essential. Still, we don’t often remember the engineers who designed the cell phone tower, or the IT professionals who keep the lines of communication humming along, not to mention the CIOs and CISOs who determine and direct the ways these technologies come together to reach us.

The intrepid professionals who’ve devoted their careers to technology have gifted us with far more than convenience; they’ve given us the tools to build a better world. They have secured our national defense and cultivated healthier, cleaner food and water sources. Their contributions occur outside of the public eye: in board rooms and labs, during late-night strategy sessions and work calls taken at home. It’s far easier to see the accomplishments of the big-screen star and the world-class athlete, but it is far more important to recognize the accomplishments of the technologist, the scientist, the entrepreneur. Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology magazine has taken up this vital work of recognition. We are delighted to find that the work of some of our Most Influential Hispanics in Technology has a broader purview than ever before; however, this presents a new challenge: how can we best honor this remarkable group of individuals?

We started by considering the vast scope of their influence within their industries, among their communities, and around the world. The level of engagement and the quality of commitment we found was inspiring, but not surprising. After all, if there is one thing we’ve found, it’s that even before we cast our light on them, the best and the brightest were already shining.
