Oregon Finalizes
Environmental Literacy Plan
On October 1, 2010, the state of Oregon completed its fi rst environ- mental literacy
plan for students in grades K through 12. State legislation passed in 2009 and supported by the No Oregon Left Inside Coalition created the Oregon Environmen- tal Literacy Task Force, chaired by Traci Price, which was charged with creating the Oregon Plan. It is designed to ensure that students in Oregon are prepared to address environmental issues related to the challenges of climate change, energy, national security, and health risks. Now, joining Nebraska and Maryland, Oregon strengthens its commitment as a leader in environmental and sustainable practices by applying environmental literacy in classrooms starting at a young age. Having an environmental literacy plan in place will position Oregon to be eligible for pending funds through federal No Child Left Inside legislation which is gaining ground daily. As part of the Oregon Environmental Literacy Plan, the Task Force is charged with several tasks, including preparing students to under- stand and address the major environ- mental challenges facing Oregon and the United States; help establish programs that promote healthy lifestyles through outdoor recreation and sound nutrition; and create professional development opportunities for teachers to improve their knowledge of environmental issues and skills in teaching about environmental issues.
Training Teachers in Sustainability Education
Gregory Smith, Professor in the Lewis
and Clark College Graduate School of Edu- cation and Counseling, recently received a $19,380 grant from the Gray Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation to train teachers in the West Linn (OR) School District on environmental issues.
CLEARING 2010 The Sustainability Education Initiative
is a program of professional development coursework and activities for K-12 teachers in the West Linn-Wilsonville School Dis- trict. During three courses offered in 2009, Smith prepared 50-60 teachers to incorpo- rate sustainability issues into their class- rooms and help them implement school or community projects that will enhance local natural and social environments. Partici- pants will be eligible for small seed grants to fund start-up projects. The grant aims to increase the number of teachers imple- menting sustainability projects in schools, and increase student and educator aware- ness of local natural systems, ecologies, and social needs.
