Editors note Welcome to the 2010 Compendium Issue of CLEARING Magazine!

This is the second installment of what has become the new look of CLEARING. For most of the year, CLEARING is a website (www.clearing- magazine.org/online), featuring a regularly updated selection of articles, reviews, and blog commentary on environmental and place-based edu- cation topics. But once every year we gather up the best of that content, along with new and original material, and publish it in the old-fashioned magazine format that you are looking at here. This is part of our ingenious strategic plan: to keep one foot in each

of the diverging worlds of print and online publishing. Instead of cast- ing our lot entirely in one direction, we have chosen to do both, and we hope that this format will serve and satisfy a wide audience of readers who prefer one or the other format. The really great thing about this format, from an editor’s perspective,

is that even though this digital edition appears to be a polished and fi nal product, it is actually a fl uid and changeable entity. If I fi nd any mistakes or want to adjust the content in any way, I can make those changes and simply repost the fi le as an updated version. Having said all that, it must be noted that the actual printed version of this edition — the one that utilizes ink and paper — has not actually been produced. This is due to the circumstances that CLEARING has always faced - lack of funds. We were denied a grant this past fall that would have put this publication on a solid path towards sustainability, so now we are looking at other strategies to provide that support. In the meantime, the publication is being posted online and can be printed out for convenience or read on your computer screen. At the same time, I am happy to acknowledge the organizations

and individuals who have chosen to support CLEARING as a sponsor or advertiser on the website and in this issue. The logos of those orga- nizations can be seen on this page and in ads throughout this issue. To those groups and the people they represent, I thank you for your support and hope that we can continue to add many more names to the list of CLEARING supporters. I hope you enjoy the many great articles and other features in this 2010 Compendium Issue. Perhaps they will inspire you to contribute an article for next year’s addition. Here’s to a prosperous and happy new year!
