Realising the finite, and sometimes


volatile nature of the coal business, Rudrum was the first to import extracite briquettes from Germany into the UK. In the 1970s as political uncertainty disrupted coal supplies, he arranged the first shipments of Anthracite from South Africa. Even in those days, he was already looking beyond the coal industry for future growth, pioneering the importation of colour TVs having obtained the UK distribution rights from a manufacturer in Finland. Perhaps Rudrum’s sons, who took on the


business upon his death in 1985 and renamed it Rudrum Holdings in his memory, also inherited his entrepreneurial flair. They seem aware, as Clifford was, that the business needed to have interests outside of coal, since they have recently embarked on the company’s first project under the banner of CMR Leisure, the property and leisure subsidiary of Rudrum Holdings. Shifting coal may seem as far removed from


luxury hotel development as those Chilean miners once did from the Earth’s surface, but it is a journey CMR Leisure have completed with some aplomb with the launch of The Cornwall, which is being managed by Bespoke Hotels.


Their first step was the acquisition of


the White House, a Regency manor house built in 1834, at Tregorrick near St Austell, which had been unoccupied since the 1960s and fallen into disrepair. Architects and interior designers AWW Plc were enlisted to restore and extend the property into
