HOTEL REVIEW

floor. The patterns are then repeated in

more muted colour combinations or duo- tones in the lobby seating upholstery, the cylindrical pendant lampshades commissioned from Flos and the finishes of the sofa frames and boxy lampshades on the concierge desk. The lobby also references the antiquity of Sicily with plaster bas-reliefs moulded by Recuperando from historic local monuments and the offset Moorish wall patterning of small Tufo stone bricks. Reed awnings that shade terraces have been

replicated in plaster ceiling panels.Continuing the outside in approach are the loosely woven lobster pot-like lampshades in the Torre Bar and the netting balustrades at the open terrace of the Amare sea-grill restaurant, for which real fishnet was sourced from a ship chandler in the nearby port of Sciacca. Guestrooms feature single bright walls of

colour (violet, ochre, scarlet) that offset the polished concrete floors and black casework by Visentin Casa. A romantic touch is added

by the netting that drapes around the bed from a suspended frame. The curtaining can be kept out of the way by a simple series of buttons, a solution developed by trial and error. The rooms are spacious and most have walk-through dressing rooms to bathrooms fitted out in local Pietra di Modica stone. A cushioned bench or daybed next to the bathtub is upholstered in waterproofed Nautica leather as used in yachts. Bathrooms often receive natural daylight from one of Albanese’s cut outs or internal courtyards. Several environmentally sustainable

initiatives are present in the resort. Motor vehicles are banned and electric buggies used instead. Solar panels topping the public buildings, including the spa and event spaces, are supplemented by a field of photovoltaic cells besides the resorts’ own reservoirs (and hotel school). Grey water recycling is standard and benefits the golf course and the replanting programmes of olive and citrus groves in the valley within which Verdura majestically sits.
