No matter the situation you are living under, summer times should always mean friends, fun and sun, especially if you are a teenager or an adolescent. In Gaza, Sharek teamed up with German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) for the consecutive year in order to sweeten the summer of over 2.000 young people between 16 and 22 years old by organizing summer camps with a lot of fun activities that also focused on life skills. In the Life Skills and Social Entrepreneurship Corner the participants received training in activities related to their future professional life, such as CV composing, job interview skills, project management as well as cooperation and leadership skills. In the Media and Advocacy Corner we focused on training related to the field of journalism, including the use of new social media. In the Artistic Self- Expression Corner participants were able to explore different artistic ways of expressing themselves and in the Community Outreach Corner they gained knowledge about challenges experienced by them through awareness sessions about human rights, youth employment and other social issues.

Kholoud Sawalmah, 29, project coordinator, explains: “The youth gains a lot from these camps. One of the young guys who joined us was very irritable, impolite, looking for trouble and not taking part in the activities. Just after one week, in which the assistant and the project coordinator were working closely with him, he started to show commitment to the project and to its activities. He started to take part in all of the different corners of the camp, which made him completely change his behavior. Even the parents came by to tell how happy they were about that. You can say that the nature of the project has a very good impact on the personality and the development of young people. Another guy which story I remember, lost one of his legs during the last war. He had a big talent for dabka, a traditional dance, and had the strong will to move on even with his new handicap. He participated in the project, where he started to train other young people.”
