Jenkins⁄Bentey The
wedding from the
photographer’s point of view
By Andre McWilliams I had the pleasure of photo-
graphing the wedding of Carl Bentley and Councilwomen Saunteel Jenkins. The ceremony was to have taken place on the golf course of the Detroit Golf Club, but because of the rain, the nuptials had to take place inside. The staff at the Detroit Golf Club transformed one of the ballrooms into a beautiful and intimate wedding chapel.
Judge Damon J. Keith performed the ceremony. It
ended without a hitch when the judge announced, “Now you may kiss your bride.” Carl had already kissed Saunteel two times during the ceremony.
THE NEWLYWEDS: Saunteel & Carl Bentley.
When the cocktail hour began it stopped raining, which
allowed me the opportunity to shoot a few photos outside before the dinner bell rang. The guests were ushered inside to experience “Taste of Detroit.” The couple pre- sented five food stations that represented varies attrac- tions throughout the city, including Corktown, Mexican town, Paradise Valley, Eastern Market and Greektown. The food was wonderful.
After dinner the newlyweds were toasted by the
sister of the bride, Ethel Franklin, and the best man, Gregory Bowens. They had their first dance, and then shared a cupcake, another cute non-traditional con- cept. The cupcakes were presented in an assortment
of flavors, including Vernor’s Float, Faygo Lemon Lime, Orange, and Root Beer Float, Sander’s Salted Carmel Chocolate, and Sander’s Bumpy Cake.
After expressing thanks to the guests and announcing
the merger of the two families (which they jokingly re- named the “Jentley” family), they were invited back into the room where the wedding had take place earlier. The room had been transformed into a fun room where the guests could have a photo flip book made of them while standing in front of a life-sized cutout of Saunteel and Carl wearing wacky golf attire. They also could enjoy one of the cup- cakes.
The evening concluded with dancing and, of course,
the Soul Train line. The musical vibes were conducted by Detroit’s own DJ Emmett Burkes. This was one the most creative and stylish weddings I have ever attended. This was truly the wedding of the year. I am happy that I can call myself a friend of the newlyweds. Congratulations to a beautiful couple, Ms. Saunteel and Mr. Carl Bentley.
