Take control of your health: Eating right, exercising and having a medical home

By Dr. P.A. Maryland Dr. Patricia A. Maryland,

president and CEO of St. John Providence Health System and the Michigan Market Leader for Ascension Health, shares personal insights on taking control of your health.

What do you see as the

biggest health problem in Metro Detroit?

Chronic diseases like dia-

betes, high blood pressure and asthma. We need educa- tion, prevention and chronic disease management. Most importantly, everyone should have a medical home.

What is a medical home? A medical home is simply a

primary care or family doctor who partners with you on your health needs, whatever they may be. It is amazing how many people do not have a family doctor.

Do we need to see the

doctor every year for a physi- cal?

Yes! It’s also crucial to stay

on top of preventive screen- ings, like mammograms, pros- tate screenings, colonosco- pies. Detecting diseases early gives you best chances of early intervention and proper treat- ment.

We hear a lot about “know-

ing your numbers.” What does that mean?

Knowing your numbers

refers to the important factors that contribute to your heart health. They include blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels and body mass index.

As a busy executive, what’s

your advice regarding making the time for your health?

You have to view your

health as a priority and make an appointment. Add the time to your schedule.

It’s the best

thing you can do for yourself and your family. I’ve made a commitment to my health this year and have never felt better. I take the time every day to exercise and make healthy choices with my eating.

How can you take control

of your family’s health? Involve your kids, make it a

family challenge to have more physical activity together and eat healthier. Both my daugh- ter and son are active in sports

and that’s a great way for kids to be active. My family still enjoys things like hamburgers and mac and cheese, but we have those as a “special treat” rather than all the time.

What are some easy steps

we can take to change our eating habits?

Start with small changes,

like revising some of your fa- vorite recipes to be healthier by adding more vegetables and using good fats like olive oil. Visit the farmers markets for fresh, local produce.

How much exercise should Dr. Patricia A. Maryland

we be getting? Experts recommend two

types of physical activity each week: moderate intensity aer- obic activity or “cardio,” and muscle-strengthening activi- ties. Great examples of cardio include walking, riding a bike or swimming. Muscle-strength- ening activities should work all the major muscle groups of your body (legs, hips, back, chest, abdomen, shoulders, and arms). Examples include lifting weights, yoga, even gar- dening.
