Good deeds are in order this week. Per- form all the random acts of kindness that you can. Everything you do this week is going to come back to you in triplicate, so enjoy storing up some future blessings.
ARIES
Soul Affirmation: Another week in which to rejoice is upon me.
Lucky Numbers: 2, 32, 45
Keep focused. Your energies are likely to be spread out this week. Your attention is likely to be pulled in many directions. Let yourself be seduced by the things that interest you most. Concentrate on your affairs. Others need you, but they can wait.
TAURUS
Soul Affirmation: I find a source of strength in someone I love.
Lucky Numbers: 7, 20, 21
Hardly anyone alive learns new skills in an instant, so cut yourself some slack if you feel you’ve made a beginner’s mis- take somewhere. Mistakes are part of the learning process that is called life, so self- correct and proceed with happiness.
GEMINI
Soul Affirmation: I let go and let the spirit take control.
Lucky Numbers: 20, 42, 54
This week will bring a tendency to dwell on a past betrayal. Your feelings of sus- picion are well founded. However, do not personalize it. Work against the harmful act but not against the person who com- mitted it.
CANCER
Soul Affirmation: I am what I consistently do.
Lucky Numbers: 5, 6, 23 Look forward to excellent financial news LEO
By V. Lonnie Peek, Jr. It is a sure thing that ev-
eryone reading this column has made a mistake. No, not a mistake, but many mistakes. We all have made bad choices. Some make them over and over again. But many reach a point where their current choices begin to distance them from the bad choices, the mistakes they made in the past.
But suppose there was a
barrier, a wall, a blockade, an obstacle that keeps you from making progress, an obstruc- tion that will not go away. No matter how hard you try to im- prove your life, you keep run- ning up against an obstacle that reminds you of your past mistakes and hinders you from becoming a better person and improving your quality of life.
That is the reality for those
who have been convicted of a crime, who have served their time and have paid their debt to society. Every time they go for employment, there is a box that they have to check that asks, “Have you been con- victed of a crime?” When they are honest and check the box, most of the time the job inter- view ends. If they don’t tell the truth and get hired, when the employer finds out they get fired.
I have run across hundreds
of people who carry this ball and chain around their ankle. I teach a class at WCCCD under Project MEN (Male Education- al Network), where citizens are sent to us by the Wayne County STEP program be- cause they have difficulty ad- vancing in life due to previous mistakes that are a permanent part of their record. They tell stories of frustration where they keep trying to move their lives, but they can’t get past “the box.”

Lucky Numbers: 6, 25, 47 It is past time to ‘ban the box’
concerning a lady, Debra Rowe, who was sent to prison more than 20 years ago. She is now 51 and she has earned an MA. She is also a certified grant management specialist and a certified correctional health care professional. She has been on the straight and narrow for more than two de- cades, but she can’t get a job in her areas of specialty be- cause of “the box.” All of the education and training that she has obtained has not freed her from her past mistakes.

sion being generated in De- troit relative to a proposal that could come through City
Council that would eliminate this question from job appli- cations in Detroit. The time has come for this archaic form of perpetual punishment to be eliminated. Research shows that those who are working commit fewer crimes.
Sure, the elimination will
not guarantee that some folks will still not make wrong deci- sions. But think of the count- less others who will now have a door to walk through into a new life of employment and career.
Don’t we all deserve an-
other chance to make things right?
