guage, and it is true, especially for those whose music appreciation is multidimensional.
One event that many people from in and
around Detroit and beyond look forward to every year is the Concert of Colors, which took

Roberta Flack Meanwhile, Flack’s solo
career continued to blossom with albums such as “Chapter Two” and “Quiet Fire.” In 1973 she delivered another classic hit, “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” and yet another the fol- lowing year, “Feel Like Makin’ Love,”
IN 1983, Flack enjoyed a
fifth duet smash, but this time her partner was Peabo Bryson. The song was the lovely “To- night, I Celebrate My Love.” She was also successful, though not as much so, with “Set the Night to Music,” recorded with Maxi Priest in 1991. This was

In a recent column I noted
that Patti Austin is the god- daughter of Quincy Jones and was also the goddaughter of the late, great Dinah Wash- ington. Reader Ruby Ware sent a letter informing us that Washington and Jones were a couple at one time. This has been confirmed by Austin.
We received an e-mail from
Shirley Jones, former lead singer of the Jones Girls, whose new solo album, “Feels Like Heaven,” will be released soon. She also reports that she, Jean Carne and Gwen McCrae recently did a show in London, England, called “Queens of American Soul.” The 3,500-seat venue was sold out.
Even though Eminem is a consistent top seller in the
Black community, and his latest album, “Recovery,” is currently No. 1 on the na- tional R&B/Hip-Hop chart, his concert audiences are pre- dominantly White. The racial composition of the audience at the Eminem/Jay-Z concert on Sept. 2 at Comerica Park will be interesting.
People assume that
celebrities are always doing something “exciting.” Not so. Rihanna, for example, says when not working, “I just watch TV all day.”

Roberta Flack received a
great honor in 1999, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That same year she had the pleasure of performing in South Africa for President Nelson Mandela.
It was also an honor for
Flack when “Killing Me Softly With His Song” was remade by the Fugees (with Lauryn Hill on lead vocal) in 1996. The new version was a No. 1 hit and, not surprisingly, many if not most younger people were unaware of the fact that the
