Complain, and then go VOTE on August 3rd!

By Edgar Vann III Recently, I saw a bumper sticker on someone’s car that read,

“If you don’t vote, don’t complain.” My initial thought was, “That’s right!” But immediately after, I thought this is not the best position to take when it comes to getting folks out to vote.

Each of us can look around our neighborhoods, or even at our

own lives, and identify areas that are affected by the decisions our elected officials make. Whether it’s a public safety, transportation, or education issue, we all should have something to say about the policy and budgeting decisions that our elected officials make. This is especially true of the state representatives who we elect to be our voice on the House floor in Lansing.

I don’t mind complaints. The fact is that if no one complained,

little would ever get done! We would be stagnant. Complaining is the first step to making a difference in Lansing. Voters have the right to speak out on the issues that concern them. Voters have the right to say that they do not like the latest tax policy, or that they are tired of not having reliable, modern public transportation. It’s by speaking out that we can move Detroit and Michigan forward. But we have to take it a step further and make sure we get out and vote!

Not long ago, Michigan celebrated the groundbreaking of a

new battery plant in Holland, Michigan. President Obama came to town and the event was touted as another example of the state’s bright future in new technologies.

Some would classify calling for that same kind of investment

in Detroit, which creates jobs and more business growth, as complaining. But I see it as a call for action. As state representative for District 4, one of my jobs would be to know the invaluable land and human resources we have in Detroit. I would work with fellow Detroit representatives to draw attention and recognition to our city, and enact the policies necessary to make Detroit most attractive for new business investments. I will always be available to listen to my constituents’ concerns and use the information they share to guide my decisions. I will not dismiss their concerns as meaningless complaints.

So I say to voters making their decisions about who they will

elect on Tuesday, August 3rd, to go ahead and complain. Make a mental list of everything that you see wrong in your community and take it with you to your polling location. Vote for the candidate that will hear your concerns and take action. I am the candidate who will always have a listening ear, and a ready hand to get Michigan and Detroit on the move for progress!
